Cancer Series #5 – The Gut Microbiome and Cancer

This article is fifth in a special Cancer Series of articles featured by Arizona Center of Advanced Medicine.

Submitted by Dr.Martha Grout, M.D., M.D.(H) Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine, Scottsdale (Phoenix), Az.

In 2007 the National Institutes of Health (NIH) provided funding for the Microbiome Project – a consortium of researchers seeking to define the normal bacterial population of the human body. And on June 14th of 2012 some 200 scientists from 80 institutions published much of this research[1] in a coordinated fashion in a special edition of Nature magazine as well as several other Public Library of Science (PLoS).

The scientists used genome sequencing techniques – much like the technique used for the stool analysis we do on our patients with inflammatory illness – to define the normal composition of organisms in our gut, our skin, our nose, our mouth, our ears, our vaginas.

Several interesting findings came from this research.

First, the technique of growing organisms in culture (the standard way to analyze stool in laboratory tests typically covered by your insurance) manages to identify only a few organisms. The technique of identifying DNA and RNA found only in bacteria is much better, because it identifies ALL the organisms in a sample, not just the ones the ones that we can persuade to grow in an artificial medium.

Second, the number of organisms is ten times the number of cells in the human body. The contents of the intestinal tract form the largest organ in the body. And healthy individuals do not all carry the same bacterial population.[2]  Interesting…

Third, we ALL carry pathogens – organisms that can potentially cause disease – in our gut. Whether they make us ill seems to depend more on our individual state of health, rather than the nature of the germ. So sorry, Louis Pasteur. Germs are important, to who they live in is even more important.

“We have defined the boundaries of normal microbial variation in humans,” said James M. Anderson, M.D., Ph.D., director of the NIH Division of Program Coordination, Planning and Strategic Initiatives, which includes the NIH Common Fund. “We now have a very good idea of what is normal for a healthy Western population and are beginning to learn how changes in the microbiome correlate with physiology and disease.”

View the video below which featuring an Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine cancer patient…

Of somewhat humbling note is the fact that bacteria in our gut are responsible for our survival. They contribute more genes for production of enzymes than our own gut tissues provide – by a factor of 360! Bacteria produce vitamins and anti-inflammatory compounds that we cannot produce on our own.

What does this all have to do with cancer? There is as yet no direct proof of a link. However, we do know that there is a link between dietary saturated fat and the resulting inflammatory immune response, with development of colitis in an experimental mouse population.[1]

View our Cancer IPT Treatment video below…

The concept is beginning to appear in the literature with regards to humans as well. One article concludes that “dietary bioactive compounds and the intestinal microbiota create a complex milieu that directly affects the carcinogenic events of the colon.”[2]

In other words, be careful what you eat. Feed your gut bacteria. Do not try to kill them all off with antibiotics, because you will just be shooting yourself in the foot. Our gut bacteria are our friends, not our enemies – unless we try to kill them. Even the friendliest of allies get nasty when you shoot at them.

Oral cancer – Early detection test now available. Cancer Series #21. Featured by Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine treating 300+ holistic and medical conditions in Scottsdale (Phoenix), AZ. Call 480-240-2600.

The Exclusive Cancer Series #21. Oral cancer – Early detection test now available.

Submitted by as part of the ‘Exclusive Cancer Series’ of articles by Dr. Martha Grout, M.D., M.D.(H) at the Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine Cancer Center, Scottsdale (Phoenix), Az.

It is estimated by the National Institutes of Health (NIH)[1] that 12,770 people (three times more men than women) will be diagnosed with tongue cancer, and that about 2000 of them will die of their disease. About 8% of those afflicted are under the age of 45. 40% are over the age of 65.

Cancer21-OralCancerFoundationThe tongue is not the only organ in the mouth – just the most visible. 40% of oral cancers are found in the tongue; the lips and floor of the mouth account for another 35%.[2] It is estimated that 40,250 people (again three times more men than women) will be diagnosed with cancer of the oral cavity and throat, and that about 7800 of them will die of their disease. The lips and the floor of the mouth are the next most frequent sites of disease.

Lifetime risk is about one in 100 – about the same incidence as autism. The incidence is increasing, with an 11% jump in 2007 alone.[3]

Three main causes of oral cancer are “smokeless” tobacco (snuff or chew), alcohol, and Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), presumably acquired through oral sexual intercourse. Non-smoking patients under the age of 50 are the fastest growing segment of the population in which oral cancer is diagnosed. Most of these cancers are found by dentists during the course of routine examination.Cancer21-oralimage

The NCI website states: “There is no standard or routine screening test for oral cancer.”[4]

Over half of oral cancers have already spread to the lymph nodes by the time they are seen and diagnosed. If found early, the 5 year survival is 80-90%. With spread to the lymph nodes, 5 year survival decreases to 45%.[5]

Any non-healing sore in the mouth or on the lips should prompt a visit to your dentist for examination. Your physician can also examine your mouth and tongue, but your dentist has the better tools to examine the entire oral cavity.

Screening tests have been developed. One commercially available test involves rinsing the mouth with a blue dye, then illuminating the oral cavity with a special light.[6] The following images were downloaded from the website of the company which makes the device.[7]

Cancer21-ViziLiteCompare

logoAdvancedLabServAnother test involves using salivary markers both for diagnosis and for survival estimates.[1],[2] This test is also now available commercially[3] It is based on good research published in the peer-reviewed literature, although it has not yet been validated by multiple studies.

“An Alphabet of Good Health In A Sick World”

Dr. Martha Grout, medical director and physician at Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine and Mary Budinger hold a bright candle in the midst of epidemics of chronic disease.

Never before have we seen so much chronic illness in so many people and at such a young age. People often do exactly what their insurance company told their doctors to tell them to do, and after much time and money, they still are not well. They feel conventional medicine has failed them, and too often it has. When something goes wrong, the system views our body as the enemy and bludgeons it with surgeries, drugs, and radiation.

Discover that illness is really your friend, your body’s cry for help. This book offers uncommon clarity and easily accessible information.

There is a new paradigm emerging called green medicine and consumers are demanding more of it. Green medicine has a strong respect for the body’s own healing abilities. Green medicine also recognizes that what we put into our environment, we also put into ourselves.

It is paramount today to acknowledge the impact of food, chemicals, and electrosmog (wireless technology, electrical fields). If your doctor has little to say about them, then he’s working with obsolete information. The new paradigm of medicine sees food as medicine, chemicals as more important than germs, and electromagnetic frequencies as a double edged sword.

The 2011 winner of the UnBreak Your Health Award for Best Alternative Medicine Book at Reader Views was written by Dr. Martha Grout and Mary Budinger. This well-researched guide to healthier living in our sick world covers a wide range of topics in an easy-to-read style. My conversation with Dr. Grout explored several of the concepts in the book so you can get a taste for what lies inside.

Listen to FREE podcast “Unbreak Your Health Network” Interview with Dr Martha Grout, click here > http://goo.gl/CbSAq.

“Good health is not inseparable from what is going on in the world. Some 75 percent of health care spending now goes to treat preventable chronic diseases. Well, most chronic diseases have their roots in diet and environment. Those two factors also tweak our genes in ways that affect us now and will be passed down for generations to come.”Dr. Martha Grout, Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine

“Our chemically saturated environments and our way of eating are the big white elephant in the room when health care is discussed. Let’s get our heads out of the sand. This ‘epidemic’ of chronic disease in America isn’t going away until we have a more honest dialogue about what we eat and what is in our environment.”Mary Budinger

A few of the discoveries you will make when you read the book…

- The real cause of most chronic disease is a constant, low level inflammation inside us. We can’t see it or feel it, but we can measure it. It erodes our health like saltwater on metal.

- Half the people who have heart attacks have “normal” cholesterol levels. High cholesterol does not cause heart disease.

- An epidemic of too little vitamin D helped escalate rates of cancer, autism, diabetes.

- We can use one-tenth the amount of chemo in cancer treatments and spare people the bald heads, severe nausea, and organ failure.

- Osteoporosis is a not a calcium deficiency.

- The brain’s frontal lobe usually isn’t working right in people with head injuries, ADHD, depression, autism, and other forms of brain dysfunction. Directing oxygenated blood to the frontal lobes usually works far better than drugs.

- Pollution and junk food make autoimmune diseases more common than breast cancer.

- Erectile dysfunction is usually the early warning sign of heart disease.

- Chronic illnesses first show up on an energetic level.

Part One of the book summarizes what you need to know about the impact of food, chemicals, and electrosmog. Part Two has an alphabetical listing of various health conditions and health topics.

“When you have two powerhouses of practical knowledge and medical expertise combine forces, you end up with a book such as this. When you know you are ill and do not know what to do or where to turn, simply turn the pages of this book. The answers are there.” — best-selling author Doris J. Rapp, M.D.

“Congratulations on this outstanding book. It desperately needs to be read and used to practice real healthcare by every M.D.” — Martin Plotkin, MD, MD(H), Saint Charles, IL

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for alternative health!, October 2, 2010

By Andrew

This is a great book! It covers so much and in a readable style that I could understand. If you want to know how to deal with everything that is assaulting us daily–drugs, genetically modified foods, environmental pollutants–read this book. I know Dr. Grout personally and have worked with her professionally for years. Dr. Grout serves on my company’s Advisory Board because we value her input. She is an ethical, powerful person who cares deeply about natural health and demonstrates it every day of her life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended, October 18, 2010

By Neiman

This book might save your life.

Much of what was in her book this writer had read about before in other places, but she covers in one book the reasons for many of the chronic diseases that ail thousands of us in the United   States.

According to Dr. Grout, there are numerous things in our world today that are not good for us, among them are electromagnetic fields, fluoride in our city water supply, amalgam fillings, and processed foods. And they are causing chronic illnesses; but the popular press has not informed us. You have to really dig for this information, or you can read about it in Dr. Grout’s book.

In the first part of the book, she covers what she calls the three pillars: food, chemicals, and electromagnetic energy. Even if you do not read any farther than this section, you will be able to make more informed choices in the future. In the second part of the book, she covers the causes of twenty different chronic diseases in detail. This writer feels that the sections in the second part of the book on cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis are the most important since these dreaded diseases seem to affect so many people. What she has to say will truly surprise you. Really.

Her approach in treating patients is to educate them to avoid the things that cause these diseases or to advise them on proper nutrition, not simply “to put a band-aid on” the problem by prescribing medications that have side effects. What she writes about is not simply her opinion. She cites numerous medical studies and papers at the end of each chapter that validate what she has to say. There are several references to web sites in the text that I also found very informative.

This writer believes this would be an important read for parents of small children. Once you realize the harmful ingredients that are in household chemicals that children are exposed to, or the sinister ingredients found in processed foods, you will want to protect your family by eliminating these hazards.

The book is very well written, with no grammatical or spelling errors. But most important, it is written in a manner that does not require a medical degree to understand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for everyone!, October 25, 2010

This is a great book, really well done. It explains why so many people have chronic diseases, and why they have had so much difficulty trying to find a doctor who knows how to make things right.

By  Vicki Landes for Reader Views

“An Alphabet of Good Health in a Sick World” is an impressive and comprehensive look at the dangerous world we live in.  Extremely well-organized and written with a voice of authority and experience, the book discusses a myriad of subjects that can have an extreme impact on our wellbeing.  I’m normally a skeptic, especially when it comes to alternative medicine, but by the end, I found myself rethinking my opinions on a number of things. What is Stress?

Submitted by Dr. Martha Grout, M.D., M.D.(H) Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine, Scottsdale (Phoenix), Az.

Dr Martha Grout explains “A patient gave me an article on stress from the Massachusetts General Hospital Departments of Psychiatry and Cardiology – that’s an appropriate combination.”

The title of the article is “Depression and Failure of Cholesterol Lowering after Acute Myocardial Infarction”.[1]  The authors were linking depression with higher cholesterol levels and higher mortality after a heart attack, despite treatment with statin drugs like Lipitor®, and suggesting that lowering the cholesterol further might help treat the depression.

In the discussion section of the article, they did mention that depression in a of itself may cause elevated cholesterol levels because of the effect of stress hormones raising cortisol levels. High cortisol levels are associated with high cholesterol levels.

So it would make sense to work on the high cortisol levels, right? Treat the stress (or the depression), treat the cortisol, lower the cholesterol and decrease mortality from heart attacks.

So why does the body raise its cholesterol levels in the first place? Cholesterol is at the head of the chain that manufactures things like Vitamin D, sex hormones and cortisol.

Cortisol? Isn’t that what is produced in response to stress? Hm’m’m…

Most of us associate the word “stress” with the word “emotional” – i.e. emotion-based, with all the associated factors relating to difficulty coping with a given situation.

View a new video “Stress” by Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine, click here >>  http://vimeo.com/47271052 .

We know that stress impacts the body, because we see it all the time. Monday morning heart attacks. Death of a spouse followed within a short time by death of the partner. Heartburn. Agida. Asthma. Depression. Anxiety. The list goes on…[1]

We use these concepts in our metaphors. How often do we hear things like “died of a broken heart”, or talk about how some situation may give us “heartburn”. Clearly we are comfortable with the idea that the heart is somehow associated with emotion.

We even have evidence of physiologic change in the organism under stress.

With acute stress, we see the “fight, flight, freeze” response – racing heart, emptying of the bowels and bladder, hyperfocus on the stress-inducer to the exclusion of everything else. The result may be belligerence, or running away, or simply paralysis – depending upon whether there is a perceived way out.

Our bodies are very finely tuned machines, and have developed over the course of our evolution many ways of dealing with problems that we have all the time, every day. Cortisol is one of those mechanisms. But cortisol doesn’t just come out of thin air. It has to be manufactured by the adrenal glands, in response to a signal from the pituitary gland in the brain that recognizes the need for more cortisol. And if cortisol causes us to lay down more cholesterol, there may be a good physiologic reason.

Maybe we with our pharmaceutical drugs are trying to put the cart before the horse.

Does the answer to stress actually lie in the realm of perception rather than entirely in the realm of the physical?

Might we actually have really good control of stress if we can simply change our attitude about it?

That sounds simplistic, doesn’t it? But there is plenty of evidence that control of our reaction is key to changing our response to stress.[1]

We tend to feel more stress when we see no way out of our situation. Rats raised in isolation are under severe stress, and die at a younger age than rats raised in a group. So do people.[2] When the isolated rats are given nesting material, they heal from wounds faster.[3] Stress early in life, as well as isolation later in life, is associated with reduced longevity, both in birds[4] and in people.[5]

So what can we do about stress? The serenity prayer written by the German theologian Reinhold Niebuhr is one really good solution:

“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

That pretty much sums it up. Each of us has control over only one person’s behavior – our own. We have the choice, to keep running in the squirrel cage, or to look up and find the door in the ceiling, the way out of the box.

The Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine reminds us “We have the choice.”

Communities Learn the Good Life can be a Killer.

By Christopher T. Martin

ACTIVE ANTIDOTE Atlanta is transforming an old rail corridor into a trail network that encourages walking and biking.

Developers in the last half-century called it progress when they built homes and shopping malls far from city centers throughout the country, sounding the death knell for many downtowns. But now an alarmed cadre of public health experts say these expanded metropolitan areas have had a far more serious impact on the people who live there by creating vehicle-dependent environments that foster obesity, poor health, social isolation, excessive stress and depression.

As a result, these experts say, our “built environment” — where we live, work, play and shop — has become a leading cause of disability and death in the 21st century. Physical activity has been disappearing from the lives of young and old, and many communities are virtual “food deserts,” serviced only by convenience stores that stock nutrient-poor prepared foods and drinks.

Early Life Stress Harms Mental Function and Immune System in Later Years, According to New Research.

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2004) — Evidence continues to mount that prenatal and early experience can have profound long-term effects on the developing central nervous system and its regulation of basic physiology, psychology, and immune function. Several reports at the Society For Neuroscience annual meeting demonstrate that this phenomenon is conserved across species-from the barn owl to rodents to humans-suggesting that these effects are mediated by fundamental mechanisms.

Insight into one potential mechanism comes from studies showing how maternal care can induce alterations in gene methylation in offspring. Other new research is uncovering how stresses during pregnancy and early life can affect learning and memory, as well as immune function, much later in life, long after the stress has disappeared. Still other studies are unraveling the cellular basis for how early life stresses can lead to later cognitive impairment, the effects of using selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors such as Prozac during early development on the emotional behavior of adult mice, and how experience—hunting in the case of barn owls—can dramatically increase adult animals’ adaptability to new stimuli. Together, these studies point to exciting new approaches for potentially lessening or preventing these long-term changes that can lead to disease or psychopathologies.

Diabetes Study Ends Early With a Surprising Result.

Previously posted at Times website.

Comment by Dr. Martha Grout MD, MD (H), Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine, to the NY Times about this article:

No effort was made to measure inflammation, as far as I can see. And all the patients were on intensive lipid-lowering drugs (without mention of CoQ-10 replacement therapy). So the results were in a sense predictable. If we still have a high inflammatory state (eating pro-inflammatory foods, requiring detoxification of chemicals and pharmaceutical drugs) AND we take a drug which completely stops the synthesis of CoQ-10 (required for the mitochondria to detoxify the body and produce energy for its sustenance) AND we do not give the body what it needs in order to detoxify the drugs that we are giving it – is it really surprising that mortality would not be reduced, and might even be higher?

I would be very interested in seeing a study which compared standard diabetes management with a regimen consisting of intensive anti-inflammatory control through measures like nutritional support, dietary glycemic index control, mental/emotional stress relief measures. We have patients who get off their glucose-lowering medications completely, through these measures alone.

Diabetes Study Ends Early With a Surprising Result.

A large federal study of whether diet and weight loss can prevent heart attacks and strokes in overweight and obese people with Type 2 diabetes has ended two years ahead of schedule because the intensive program did not help.

“I was surprised,” said Rena Wing, the study’s chairwoman and a professor of psychiatry and human behavior at BrownUniversity’s medical school.

Like many, she had assumed diet and exercise would help, in part because short-term studies had found that those strategies lowered blood sugar levels, blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

But, Dr. Wing added, “You do a study because you don’t know the answer.”

Still, medical experts said there were many benefits to diet and exercise even if they did not reduce cardiovascular disease in people with diabetes.

About 25 million Americans have Type 2 diabetes. Many are overweight or obese. On average, the disease increases heart disease risk by 2 to 2 ½ times, said Dr. Ronald Kahn, chief academic officer at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston.

It seemed logical that diet and exercise would help reduce that risk. An earlier federal study found that an intense diet and exercise program helped prevent overweight or obese people with elevated blood sugar levels from crossing the line into diabetes. The hope was that a similar program could also protect people from heart disease.

The study randomly assigned 5,145 overweight or obese people with Type 2 diabetes to either a rigorous diet and exercise regimen or to sessions in which they got general health information. The diet involved 1,200 to 1,500 calories a day for those weighing less than 250 pounds and 1,500 to 1,800 calories a day for those weighing more. The exercise program was at least 175 minutes a week of moderate exercise.

But 11 years after the study began, researchers concluded it was futile to continue — the two groups had nearly identical rates of heart attacks, strokes and cardiovascular deaths.

The investigators are analyzing their data and will be publishing them in research papers.

But the outcome is clear, said Dr. David Nathan, a principal investigator and director of the Diabetes Center at Massachusetts General Hospital. “We have to have an adult conversation about this,” he said. “This was a negative result.”

The study participants assigned to the intensive exercise and diet program did lose about 5 percent of their weight and managed to keep it off during the study. That was enough to reduce cardiovascular risk factors.

“We showed that meaningful weight loss — let’s put ‘meaningful’ in quotes — could be established and maintained,” Dr. Nathan said. “To me that means we did a good experiment. We had a fair test of this hypothesis.”

Some, like Dr. John Buse, director of the University of North   Carolina’s diabetes center, said the study confirmed what they would have expected. Dr. Buse, a former president of the American Diabetes Association, said treatments including smoking cessation, statins to reduce cholesterol and blood pressure medications are so powerful that they could swamp the modest effects of weight loss or exercise on cardiovascular risk.

Other medical experts said they were waiting for release of the detailed data collected by the researchers before interpreting the study.

“It is hard to tell anything without the details of the study,” said Dr. Irl Hirsch, medical director of the Diabetes Care Center at the University of Washington.

Dr. Nathan, though, said the results meant that people with diabetes might have a choice. The group assigned to diet and exercise ended up with about the same levels of cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar as those in the control group, but the dieters used fewer medications.

“That may be the choice we are highlighting,” Dr. Nathan said. “You can take more medications — and more, I should say, expensive medications — or you can choose a lifestyle intervention and use fewer drugs and come to the same cardiovascular disease risk.”

He is not going to say which is better, Dr. Nathan added. That is up to the individual. But, he said, “those are real choices.”

What If Dieting Merely Lets Diabetics Take Fewer Medicines?

New York Times reporter Gina Kolata does a great job sifting through the wreckage of a federally funded study that failed to show a benefit to dieting and sustained weight loss for people with adult-onset diabetes. At the end, from Harvard diabetes specialist David Nathan, is this:

That’s a pretty shocking idea — that makes diet and exercise merely a way to reduce, but not eliminate, the need for drug treatment. The reality of many chronic diseases, like heart disease and diabetes, may well be that they are unlikely to be treated by diet alone.

Tight Blood Sugar Control May Put Some Diabetics at Risk

Death risk higher in those with type 2 and heart disease striving for ‘normal’ glucose levels: study

Intensive blood sugar control doesn’t benefit people with both type 2 diabetes and heart disease — and it may harm them, researchers say.

Trying to maintain the blood sugar levels typical of people without diabetes can increase the risk of death for people with type 2 diabetes and heart disease by 19 percent, according to the latest analysis from the long-running ACCORD study.

“This study reports that at least over the five-year period of time, although there continued to be a reduction in the rate of [heart attack], a significant increase in mortality still exists,” said the study’s lead author, Dr. Hertzel C. Gerstein, the Population Research Health Institute Chair in Diabetes Research at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada.

ACCORD stands for Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes. This study was designed to assess whether intensive blood sugar interventions to bring A1C levels to under 6 percent would benefit people with type 2 diabetes and heart disease. A1C is a long-term measure of blood sugar control, and the A1C level provides about two to three months of average blood sugar levels. A level of under 6 percent, which is considered normal or non-diabetic, can be difficult for someone with diabetes to achieve.

The people recruited for the ACCORD study were between 40 and 79 years old, and their A1C levels were above 7.5 percent at the start of the study. Study volunteers were randomly assigned to either intensive blood sugar control or to a standard diabetes program striving for levels of 7 percent to 7.9 percent.

The study began in 2001 and was halted in February 2008 when researchers realized that people in the intensive treatment group had an increased risk of dying. By then, the intensive treatment group had received 3.7 years of treatment aimed at lowering their A1C levels to below 6 percent. Achieving such tight blood sugar control often required numerous interventions, such as lifestyle changes along with medication, multiple medications or insulin therapy.

The analysis includes five years of data. For the intensive group, that meant an average of 3.7 years of intense treatment, followed by 1.3 years of standard therapy.

At the time the study was stopped, the intensive therapy group experienced a 21 percent reduction in the risk of heart attacks, but a 21 percent increase in the risk of all-cause mortality.

After five years, the researchers found that the risk of heart attacks was still decreased by 18 percent, but the increased risk of all-cause mortality also persisted. People in the intensive therapy group had a 19 percent increased risk of dying of any cause, according to the study, published March 3 in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Gerstein said many researchers have tried to tease out why intensive blood sugar control might up the risk of death, and so far, no one has succeeded. Causes that have been ruled out include low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia) and the rapid change in blood sugar levels.

“This study really reminds us that we always need to be prudent. Even if we think something is the right thing to do, sometimes we may have findings that are unexpected,” said Gerstein.

“This study confirms the results of the ACCORD trial over the full duration of the study,” said Dr. Vivian Fonseca, president-elect of medicine and science for the American Diabetes Association.

“Overall, this means that the recommendations of the American Diabetes Association hold true. In general, people with diabetes should aim for an A1C goal of less than 7 percent, but clearly individualization is important. One size does not fit all,” said Fonseca.

And, the findings suggest that people with type 2 diabetes and heart disease shouldn’t attempt to achieve an A1C below 6 percent, the study authors said.

Gerstein and Fonseca noted that the ACCORD findings should not be generalized for everyone with diabetes. People with type 1 diabetes and those with type 2 diabetes and no history of heart disease were not included in this study.

“There is no reason to change current guidelines because of this study, and this study certainly doesn’t support ignoring glucose control. We saw benefits in eye disease and many other outcomes with good control,” said Gerstein.

Long-term effects of intensive glucose lowering on cardiovascular outcomes.

Abstract

BACKGROUND:

Intensive glucose lowering has previously been shown to increase mortality among persons with advanced type 2 diabetes and a high risk of cardiovascular disease. This report describes the 5-year outcomes of a mean of 3.7 years of intensive glucose lowering on mortality and key cardiovascular events.

METHODS:

We randomly assigned participants with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease or additional cardiovascular risk factors to receive intensive therapy (targeting a glycated hemoglobin level below 6.0%) or standard therapy (targeting a level of 7 to 7.9%). After termination of the intensive therapy, due to higher mortality in the intensive-therapy group, the target glycated hemoglobin level was 7 to 7.9% for all participants, who were followed until the planned end of the trial.

RESULTS:

Before the intensive therapy was terminated, the intensive-therapy group did not differ significantly from the standard-therapy group in the rate of the primary outcome (a composite of nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal stroke, or death from cardiovascular causes) (P=0.13) but had more deaths from any cause (primarily cardiovascular) (hazard ratio, 1.21; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.02 to 1.44) and fewer nonfatal myocardial infarctions (hazard ratio, 0.79; 95% CI, 0.66 to 0.95). These trends persisted during the entire follow-up period (hazard ratio for death, 1.19; 95% CI, 1.03 to 1.38; and hazard ratio for nonfatal myocardial infarction, 0.82; 95% CI, 0.70 to 0.96). After the intensive intervention was terminated, the median glycated hemoglobin level in the intensive-therapy group rose from 6.4% to 7.2%, and the use of glucose-lowering medications and rates of severe hypoglycemia and other adverse events were similar in the two groups.

CONCLUSIONS:

As compared with standard therapy, the use of intensive therapy for 3.7 years to target a glycated hemoglobin level below 6% reduced 5-year nonfatal myocardial infarctions but increased 5-year mortality. Such a strategy cannot be recommended for high-risk patients with advanced type 2 diabetes. (Funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute; ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT00000620.).

The Exclusive Cancer Series #22 – Integrative Cancer Care.

Important information cancer patients and their families should know.

Submitted by as part of the ‘Exclusive Cancer Series’ of articles by Dr. Martha Grout, M.D., M.D.(H) at the Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine Cancer Center, Scottsdale (Phoenix), Az.

Chemo, surgery, radiation – this is the mantra of current recommendations for cancer therapy. Treatment options on the website of the Mayo cancer18-BestAnswLogoClinic, “the most innovative, progressive care anywhere” are the following: bone marrow transplantation, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and radio frequency ablation.[1]

And yet… the incidence of cancer is projected to rise 75% by the year 2030.[2] What is wrong with this picture?

Insulin potentiation chemotherapy, low dose

The National Cancer Institute describes side effects of conventional chemotherapy on its website.[3]Cancer18-2vomit

The National Cancer Institute describes side effects of conventional chemotherapy on its website.[1]

Some common side effects from chemotherapy are fatigue, nausea, vomiting, decreased blood cell counts, hair loss, mouth sores, and pain… Sometimes, chemotherapy causes long-term side effects that do not go away. These may include damage to your heart, lungs, nerves, kidneys, or reproductive organs. Some types of chemotherapy may cause a second cancer years later.

The website does not mention death from destruction of the immune system and systemic infection.

View an entire article on Insulin potentiation chemotherapy at our website, click here >> http://goo.gl/gaXOZ .

Chemotherapy is actually pretty effective for a few cancers.4 Greater than 10% survival can be attributed to cytotoxic chemotherapy in the following cancers: cervix 12%, ovary 8.7%, testicle 41.8%, Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma 10.8%, Hodgkins Lymphoma 35.8%. Breast cancer gets only 1.5% survival increase from chemotherapy, colon cancer 1.8%, brain cancer 4.9%.

Why are we so quick to put conventional chemotherapy first on the list for cancer treatment? Graeme Morgan, an Australian radiation oncologist, writes: “For most patients, the use of cytotoxic chemotherapy is for the palliation of symptoms and to improve quality of life.” However, Dr. Morgan concludes: ““The overall contribution of curative and adjuvant cytotoxic chemotherapy to 5-year survival in adults was estimated to be 2.3% in Australia and 2.1% in the USA.” [1]

If conventional chemotherapy were less toxic, it might be worth it. But for a 2.5% benefit? It is hard to discern the advantages.

Most people are not aware that there is a gentler form of chemotherapy, known as Insulin Potentiation Therapy, low dose.[2],[3] This therapy is just as effective as standard chemo, without all the painful and sometimes lethal side effects. Insulin is used to lower the blood sugar, resulting in relatively increased starvation of cancer cells which require more sugar than normal body cells. Once the blood sugar is sufficiently low, sugar is given intravenously, along with a small dose of chemo (about 10-15% the usual dose). The chemo is sucked into the cells, along with the sugar, and concentrates in cancer cells because they are so much more avid for sugar than normal cells.[4],[5]

With IPT, the incidence of so-called side effects is markedly decreased. Most of our patients drive themselves home from treatment. They may report a little fatigue on the day of treatment. Seldom do they lose any hair at all, and they hardly ever drop their white blood cell counts. They are able to lead normal lives during the course of their IPT therapy.

If our therapies are so effective, why is the incidence of cancer projected to rise so dramatically? And why are the therapies in fact not effective cancer18-Fig1for every form of cancer?

Our bodies are full of toxins – chemicals from our foods and from the air we breathe, artificial colorings and flavorings, artificial sweeteners (like cholorinated hydrocarbons, or pesticides), high levels of sugar with consequent high levels of insulin, or even frank diabetes. So it is not surprising that mutations can occur. That is the essence of cancer. The cells mutate to a lower state of being, one where they are only concerned with growth, and not with the good of the entire organism.

Insulin Potentiation Therapy – even low dose – is NOT ENOUGH to treat cancer, any more than chemotherapy by itself is a sufficient treatment. For truly integrative cancer therapy, many different modalities are brought into play.

It is helpful to know which chemotherapy to use – which actually kills your cancer cells, not just which has been studied and had a good effect on 30% or 50% of people in whom it was tried. It is equally helpful to know which complementary – botanical and supplemental – therapies could be therapeutic.

Chemosensitivity testing is available – but not in these United States, unfortunately.  We use a laboratory in Greece, run by an oncologist, to determine which drugs and which supplements to use for the greatest effect.

  • We use standard chemotherapeutic agents – and sometimes even standard combinations as recommended in the current oncology literature.[1]
  • We use botanical remedies like Iscador[2], and supplements like high dose Vitamin C[3] (but not if bortezomib is part of the regimen chosen[4], lipoic acid[5], glutathione[6] and many others, to restore the function of natural killer cells, and to bring the body back to a state where it can defend itself against the foreign cancer cell invaders.
  • We teach our patients the basics of a healthy diet – encouraging mainly plant-based foods[7] in  the early phases.cancer18-fig3
  • We test for nutrient deficiencies, and administer nutrient IV therapies to replenish the body’s stores.
  • We work with our patients to help them dismantle barriers to healing – old dogma, old conflicts, old beliefs, old injuries, physical or emotional, which they have been unable to see or unwilling to give up.

Cancer18-belief

As with any medical therapy, it is unwise to throw out everything, because each form of therapy has its use. Chemotherapy does indeed kill many cancer cells. High dose Vitamin C kills many others. BreastCancerTreatment

Breast cancer is tired of waiting for prevention and cure.

Dr Martha Grout shared this article on her Facebook page.Tam-SABreatsCancerSymp

“We’re getting tired of waiting for prevention and a cure,” said Eastman, chairwoman of advocacy and governmental relations for the Alamo Breast Cancer Foundation. “What we hear here is just more of the same treatments, just using TamBreastLeftthem different ways.”

This was a comment on the just-released study of the use of Tamoxifen, as estrogen receptor blocker, in the treatment of ER + breast cancer.Tam-whatisCTC

Would it not be much more useful to help the body metabolize estrogens safely, so that we do not have to block the estrogen receptor and experience all the associated symptoms – hot flashes, vaginal dryness, wrinkles and loss of sex drive.

There is a test that can measure estrogen metabolites, and there is treatment to improve the metabolism. We can change our diets to decrease our body’s inflammatory state. We can eliminate exposure to chemicals in our food by eating organic.

We can test circulating tumor cells, and start to treat if the number goes up, long before there is evidence of recurrence or growth of another tumor.

Hepatitis C and Baby boomers. Featured by Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine treating 300+ holistic and medical conditions in Phoenix at its newly expanded Scottsdale Center. Call 480-240-2600.

HepCHeader

Hepatitis C and the baby boomer generation – are anti-viral drugs the only option?

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) just recommended that all members of the Baby Boomer generation be tested for Hepatitis C at least once in their adult lifetime.[1] Baby Boomers are more than 5 times more likely to be infected with Hepatitis C than anyone else in the country. Baby Boomers – meaning anyone born between 1945 and 1965.

The hepatitis C virus, first identified in 1989, kills more than 15,000 Americans each year. The CDC estimates that 3.2 million Americans are currently infected with the HepCcellsvirus. An estimated 15 – 25% of them will clear the virus from their bodies. The remaining 75 – 85% of people who become infected go on to develop chronic infection – in other words, do not heal, do not eliminate the virus, but rather simply live with it and sometimes die from it.

The virus can be spread through blood contact – i.e. sharing IV needles – or blood transfusion or organ transplantation. It can also be spread through sexual intercourse, or through sharing razors or tooth brushes.

Symptoms may be as diffuse and non-specific as fatigue, or as specific and severe as jaundice and liver failure.

Hepatitis C is currently the leading indication for liver transplantation in the United States.[1]

What is not always recognized is that symptoms may involve other organs as well.

  • Vasculitis (leukocytoclastic)[2]HepCcellwhite
  • Glomerulonephritis (kidney failure)
  • Porphyria cutanea tarda

Most of us do not indulge in IV drug use, are not exposed to needle sticks, and do not have blood transfusions or organ transplants. Unfortunately, even a single IV drug use or sharing of a razor many years ago may result in current Hepatitis C infection.

So how did the CDC determine that anyone born between 1945 and 1965 should be tested? And why is the CDC pushing for testing at this time?

First, the number of people dying of Hepatitis C doubled between 1999 and 2007.[3]Second, in 2011 the FDA approved two new drugs for treatment of Hepatitis C. Might there perhaps be some association between the new drug approval and the push for testing?

In any case, if the CDC figures are true, we have a pretty large number of people infected with a potentially fatal disease. Three percent of Baby Boomers is a lot of people – 17 million.

Current testing recommendations are for an initial Hepatitis C antibody screen. If positive, then recommendations call for Hepatitis C antibody verification by another test.

The current treatment recommendations are, not surprisingly, “watchful waiting” until the victim becomes ill, or develops a high viral count or elevation of liver enzymes. Once they are sick enough, they can be treated with pharmaceutical drugs[1].

The following drugs are currently recommended for initial therapy:HepClegs

  • Interferon – Peginterferon® alpha is administered by subcutaneous injection twice a week.
  • Ribavirin – is administered by mouth daily. The dose depends on the genotype of the virus.

And now there are two new ones, just approved in 2011

  • Boceprevir – Victrelis® – is given by mouth every 8 hours, but only after a 4-week course of interferon and ribavirin.
  • Telaprevir – Incivek® – is given by mouth every 8 hours in combination with interferon and ribavirin.

Dr Martha Grout suggests, “So that’s easy, right? Just take some drugs and everything will be fine.”

“Not so fast”, she says. The recommended drugs have pretty significant side effects – which explains why they are not used early in the course of the disease.

  • Interferon side effects include headache, fatigue, pain at site of injection, itching, skin rash, elevated liver enzymes (as if the hepatitis C damage wasn’t bad enough).  It may cause worsening of other autoimmune diseases like Lupus, thyroid disease, psoriasis, Crohn’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, low white count and low platelet count.
  • Ribavirin side effects include fatigue, headache, anemia (from blood cells being attacked), muscle aches, joint pains, and significant effect on the fetus in pregnant women.
  • Boceprevir side effects include fatigue, anemia, nausea, headache, abnormal taste, and multiple GI effects
  • Telaprevir side effects include rash, fatigue, itching, nausea, anemia

Is the treatment worse than the cure? Of course, if there were an actual cure, it might be worth the misery of treatment. Unfortunately, cure rates are not high – there is decrease of viral count in only 50% of those treated, and the course of therapy is long. A minimum of 24 weeks – 6 months – is recommended, and many patients require therapy for twice that long.

What other choices are there?

At the Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine we have had good success with treatment of patients with liver disease, including Hepatitis C, with substances which support the liver detoxification mechanisms and help to rebuild the liver cells.

Many of these therapies are with large doses of substances normally produced by the body – glutathione, lipoic acid, Vitamin C and other things which the body requires for detoxification. We also use specific treatments to help bring the immune system back into balance, so that it can deal with viral infection as was originally intended.

We also, of course, work with diet and nutrition. It is easy for a virus to thrive in an environment loaded with sugar and toxic chemicals like aspartame. Viruses have a much harder time when the environment is cleaner.

View the FREE video below, a discussion with Dr Martha Grout, “Learning alternative Medicine”.

We find that liver enzymes go down, health improves, and we do not have to deal with the side effects of the drugs – anemia, fatigue, skin rashes, worsening of autoimmune diseases, etc.

Initial screening requires simply a brief evaluation and a blood test, which insurance often (but not always) will cover.

If indeed the test is positive, then a more complete evaluation is in order, so that IV treatment may be initiated. It is possible to heal the liver. It is possible to strengthen the immune system so that it can deal with chronic infection – whether hepatitis or any other infection.

We can become healthy. Our bodies can heal, if we just give them the right tools – clean food, clean water, clean air (no smoking!). The choice is always ours. Of course, it is always easier to get healthy when the liver is still working. But even if we already have significant liver disease, the treatments mentioned above help the liver cells to regenerate and recover.

It is not too late to change our diet and lifestyle.

Dr Martha Grout reminds us “The choice is ours.”

Where do you want to be this summer? Pathway Fit® genetic testing can help kick-start you on the path to the healthier, more energetic you.

Remember that we cannot change the essence of our genes – they are what they are, unless they somehow become mutated by exposure to chemicals or radiation.

What we can change is the expression of our genes – whether they are active or not, and which ones are active.

Genes and gene expression can explain why some of us are prone to heart disease and others are not, why some of us can eat snack food all our lives and not be ill, where others of us eat healthy for most of our lives and still develop cancer.

The genetic test above is simply a way of measuring predisposition to various health conditions. Whether the predisposition becomes actuality depends entirely on our choices and our environment – what our mothers ate, what we ate (and are eating), the air we breathe, the chemicals we are (and have been) exposed to.

If you are interested in learning about your predisposition to obesity, or high cholesterol, or diabetes, then this test is for you. It can help us tailor a nutritional program for you that you can follow for the rest of your life to stay healthy.

With this combination of testing, can figure out what you need to change on a permanent basis, in order to stay healthy through old age.

This program is offered by the Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine. Call us today at 480-240-2600.

Have you tried Hypnosis? Maybe you should. Featured by Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine treating 300+ holistic and medical conditions in Phoenix with a center in Scottsdale, Arizona. Call 480-240-2600.

Hypnosis

Essential Components for Hypnosis Success
Hypnosis and guided Imagery

Generations of theorists have offered various interpretations of what hypnosis is, how it works, and what it can do.

Most practitioners agree that an essential characteristic of hypnosis involves the bypass of the conscious mind, thereby enabling the hypnotist to work directly with an individual’s subconscious mind. Deep relaxation is often associated with hypnosis, but is not a prerequisite.

The second factor that is recognized as part of a hypnotic state is a level of highly selective thinking that is acceptable to the person who is hypnotized. Research has shown that the hypnotic state is an integrated state comprised of beta, alpha, and theta brain frequencies. Hypnotists do not diagnose maladies, but rather are more concerned with eliminating unwanted behavior. The process involves accessing the subconscious mind of the client and discovering the root cause of the presenting problem, so that it may be eliminated. This is possible because our subconscious minds remember everything we’ve ever felt, said, thought, or done. Often events in life provoke internal negative emotions. If these emotions are left to fester, they can manifest in negative ways.

Charles Tebbetts created a diagram that helps to explain how the mind reacts to destructive emotions.

Essential Components for Hypnosis Success

A genuine trust and rapport must exist between the client and hypnotist, principally because most hypnosis is actually self-hypnosis; therefore, a hypnotist becomes a client’s guide or “conductor” by mutual agreement and tacit contract. An individual’s fear of hypnosis will affect the session. Fear prevents hypnosis from happening, so fears must be identified and eliminated. Some people are afraid to surrender control, forgetting that they always actually have the choice whether or not to remain in hypnosis. Some people fear that hidden secrets might be revealed.

Other misconceptions about hypnosis also abound, the most common being that people associate it with sleep. People who have been hypnotized for the first time often believe they have not entered into an altered state because they have remained alert and have heard everything that has transpired. In fact, a hyper-alertness is characteristic of the hypnotic state, as well as other symptoms, including a tingling in one’s fingers or hands, a feeling of floating, and a feeling of heaviness in the arms and legs. Such symptoms are idiosyncratic to each person.

Once the somnambulism state is achieved, a deepening of the trance allows for lasting benefits. People find they are able to free themselves from a variety of physical and emotional problems, which may be rooted in childhood trauma, guilt, anxiety, and/or anger.

Several tests for depth of trance are a part of proven inductions, and offer helpful confirmation to client and hypnotist alike. Such demonstration that an altered state of consciousness was achieved can provide helpful feedback. Lasting and valuable work can be accomplished through hypnosis and guided imagery when the trust between client and “conductor” engenders rapport and confident expectation.

A Brief History of Hypnosis

The discovery of hypnosis is often ascribed to Anton Mesmer (1734-1815), a Vienna-trained physician who discovered the power of suggestion and the enormous healing power that it offered to his patients.

Thousands of years prior to Mesmer, ancient sleep temples induced individuals into trance and guided them to find the cause and cure of their maladies.

Hypnosis, as it is known today, was discovered by the Marquis de Puysegur (1781-1825), a retired French officer. Puysegur’s findings were furthered by Joseph Phillipe François Deleuze (1753-1835), a librarian to the French Royal Botanical and Zoological Gardens, who discovered that suggestions given to a person during hypnosis would manifest during the waking state. Jose Custodio de Faria (1755-1819), an itinerant priest from Portugal, concluded in 1815 that a subject must be willing to cooperate with a hypnotist for any meaningful work to happen. In 1837, John Elliotson (1791-1868), a professor of surgery in London and also the inventor of the stethoscope. began using the hypnotic state with patients in order to perform painless surgery and to give relief to nervous disorders. Despite enormous successes, his work was thoughtlessly condemned by his conservative colleagues. In 1842, Dr. James Esdaile (1808-1859), a Scottish physician practicing surgery in Calcutta, applied Elliotson’s discoveries to induce anesthesia in his patients during surgery. Using hypnosis with thousands of patients. the mortality rate dropped from fifty to five percent. Despite the astounding success of his work, the British medical establishment rejected his findings.

Dr. James Braid (1795-1860) is sometimes called the ‘father of modern hypnosis’. In fact, he coined the term for hypnotism, deriving it from the Greek word hypnos — for sleep. Since Braid, many researchers have added new understandings and discoveries to this ancient form of healing that have subsequently succeeded in helping countless individuals.

What comes after the cancer diagnosis? Cancer Series #12. Featured by the Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine treating 300+ holistic and medical conditions in Phoenix, AZ, at our newly expanded Scottsdale center. Call 480-240-2600.

Cancer Series #12 – What comes after the cancer diagnosis?

Submitted by as part of the 2012 Cancer Series of articles by Dr. Martha Grout, M.D., M.D.(H) at the Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine Cancer Center, Scottsdale (Phoenix), Az.

OK, so the cancer diagnosis is real. They didn’t make a mistake. It wasn’t just a bad dream. It’s not fair. So what are the options?

Standard (allopathic) treatment

1. Cut it out with a knife (or a laser beam). That seems like a reasonable option, just get rid of the tumor.

2. Destroy it with radiation. Ionizing radiation is the one thing that we know for sure causes cancer. In HIGHER dose, it kills cells. In LOWER dose it causes cells to mutate. Remember all the stories of children who developed thyroid cancer in later life, after having the thymus irradiated in childhood?[1]

3. Poison it with chemotherapy. The whole point of chemotherapy is to kill rapidly dividing cells typical of a rapidly growing cancer. We HOPE that the cancer cells are killed before the regular body cells, but it doesn’t always happen that way. Hair, mucous membranes and bone marrow also have rapidly dividing cells normally. Our blood cells are renewed every 14-21 days, our hair grows half an inch per month, our mucous membranes renew themselves every 3-4 days.[2]

Oral mucositis and hair loss due to conventional chemotherapy[3],[4]

Integrative (alternative) cancer therapy

1. Ensure adequate nutrition so that the patient does not starve to death while undergoing treatment. Sufficient calories of the nutrient-dense variety – mainly vegetables and fruits, with fats to increase caloric intake, and small portions of animal proteins – will sustain the body without excessively feed the cancer. Cancer cells love both glucose (sugar) and glutamine (present in higher amounts in animal protein). So it’s a really good idea to eliminate the sugar, and at least limit the amount of animal protein consumed. Vegetables and fruits have large amounts of antioxidants and other cancer-fighting nutrients, so it’s a really good idea to makes these the majority of the diet.

2. Utilize intravenous nutritional therapies to improve the health of the stressed body, increase natural killer cell function, improve mitochondrial function (the cell’s energy factory), improve detoxification (clean up the cells), improve nutritional status (clean up the diet), increase oxygenation within the cells (cancer does not like a high oxygen environment).

3. Research alternative cancer diets to discover whether any of them is a good match for you. The Budwig diet (protein and oils), the low glycemic diet (no sugars, starches), the raw foods diet (nothing cooked, mainly vegetarian), the macrobiotic diet (brown rice, vegetables) – there are many diets you could follow. The most important thing to remember is that whatever you are doing now got you to where you are. So if you want to get somewhere else, you should change direction and take a different path.

4. Test for chemosensitivity as well as sensitivity to alternative agents. We are so concerned in this country that everything be validated by placebo-controlled double-blind studies, that we do not make use of the tests which are available, even though they might not be perfect, or might not be available in this country, or might not be covered by our insurance, just because we are afraid the tests might be incomplete or inaccurate. It is telling that the American Society of Clinical Oncology prints in its August 20, 2012 edition, the following statement: “Despite improvements in efficacy with the use of new molecular targeted and chemotherapeutic agents, most cancers remain incurable.” [1] (emphasis is mine) To my mind, any indication of chemotherapeutic effectiveness in the specific individual tumor (or circulating tumor cells) is better than using a general chemotherapeutic protocol because it sort of works in 60% of people. That seems to me like just throwing darts at a wall in the dark and hoping that some of them stick.

5. Utilize alternative cancer therapies.Vitamins like Vitamin C in very high dose, minerals like selenium and cesium, botanicals like artemisinin or PawPaw or curcumin, medicinal mushrooms like shiitake or ganoderma or agaricus brasiliensis murill, injectables like mistletoe (Iscador®)… the list goes on. These agents may not have quite as high a kill rate when incubated with the individual’s circulating tumor cells grown in cell culture – but they don’t have the kill rate of the patient either, and it is possible to take many of them at the same time without destroying the body that they were intended to heal.

6. Figure out why the cancer came where it did and when it did. Were you having trouble with a prolonged situation that you just could not swallow? And now you are struggling with esophageal cancer. Were you simply unable, or unwilling, to speak your truth? And now you find yourself with thyroid cancer, or cancer of the larynx. Were you abused (emotionally or sexually, the brain does not know the difference) as a child? And now the cancer which you developed has come to the ovaries, or the uterus, or the breasts. Did you just retire involuntarily? Lose your job? Lose your family? And now you find that you have cancer of the prostate. How about struggling with feelings of helplessness and powerlessness all your life? And now find yourself with cancer of the pancreas. You have supported people your whole life, and now you have developed myeloma or osteosarcoma in the back? It’s not that the experiences that you had caused the cancer. You did not will them to occur. It is just your body’s loudest way of trying to get you to pay attention to unresolved issues in your life. Of course the environment plays a part, that goes without saying. You could just as easily have had reflux esophagitis, or laryngitis, or low thyroid, or endometriosis, or fibrocystic breast disease, or pancreatitis…

The video below features the Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine I.P.T. treatment program…

7. Cut it out with a knife (or a laser beam). This is still a perfectly good option. If the tumor can be removed, it may be a good idea to remove it in its entirety. On the other hand, there is also concern that when a tumor is cut open, because there is bleeding, it is more likely that tumor cells will spill into the surrounding tissues, or into the circulation, thus potentially resulting in more local extension or even spread (metastasis) of the tumor.[1], [2] So if it is going to be removed, we recommend that you “go for broke” – remove it entirely, don’t just biopsy it. Don’t risk further spread along the track of the needle used for biopsy.

8. Destroy it with radiation. If there is metastatic spread to the bone, with a great deal of pain, radiation may be a reasonable choice. If there is metastatic spread to the brain, radiation may be the only choice – since chemotherapy (even low dose chemo) can cause significant tumor swelling, potentially resulting in premature death.

9. Treat it with Insulin Potentiated Low-Dose Chemotherapy – a form of chemotherapy targeted specifically at cancer cells by means of their markedly increased insulin receptors and their extraordinarily high need for glucose (sugar). We can use 5-10% of the standard dose of chemotherapy and get just as good an effect without subjecting the entire body to the high doses of the cellular poisons used in standard chemotherapy.

The choice is yours.

None of us really gets to choose when we die. We only know that eventually we are all going to die.

But we do get to choose how we lead our lives.

We can choose whether to walk for 30 minutes, or watch a television show. We can choose whether to eat green beans and wild caught salmon, or steak and potatoes, or a Big Mac and fries.

We can choose whether to take statin drugs for what some consider high cholesterol – or whether to increase our exercise, decrease our starch intake and increase our intake of vegetables and healthy proteins.

We can choose to accept what our “health” insurance – really “illness” insurance – tells us they will pay for – or we can choose to go outside the box, and try treatments which, at the very least, will be no less effective that standard therapy, and at the very most will be significantly healthier and even may be more effective than standard cancer therapy.

We can choose to examine our lives and our assumptions, and be willing to change. The need to be right often overshadows the will to survive. But it does not have to be that way. We can survive cancer.

The choice is truly ours.

Cancer Series #10- Lower your cholesterol; increase your risk of cancer?

Submitted by as part of the 2012 Cancer Series of articles by Dr. Martha Grout, M.D., M.D.(H) at the Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine Cancer Center, Scottsdale (Phoenix), Az.

But aren’t statins supposed to be the good guys? The New England Journal of Medicine published an article in May 2012 that states:

“Over a period of 4 years of statin use, a reduction of 1 mmol per liter (39 mg per deciliter) in the level of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol translates into a 9% reduction in the risk of death from any cause among patients with diabetes and a 13% reduction among those without diabetes.”[1]

That’s hard to beat. Take a pill, reduce your risk of heart attack and death by up to 13%. The article goes on to say: “Few drugs have had such a dramatic effect on health outcomes.”

The Journal of Clinical Lipidology published an article in the same month stating: “A better understanding of the characteristics of current and former statin users may be helpful for formulating strategies to improve long-term adherence.”[2] The conclusion of the article was that most patients who stopped taking their statins did so because of the side effects. The conclusion of this article was, interestingly enough, that we can increase compliance with taking the statin if only we talk more with our patients and explain to them how important it is.

If I were to take a medication and it made me feel really bad, I would want to know why it made me feel bad. What I find missing in the scientific literature about side effects from statins is any sense of concern that the side effects might represent something really important, and maybe we should figure it out before we continue to push the drugs.

View the article “High Cholesterol – 29 billion reasons to treat it”, click here >> http://goo.gl/jMkZA.

But wait… taking statins also appears to increase the risk of developing diabetes, in a dose-dependent manner – the higher the dose of a statin drug, the greater the risk of diabetes. [3] Diabetics are more likely to develop cancer than non-diabetics.[4]

The New York Times published a piece[5] in early March 2012 entitled: The Diabetes Dilemma for Statin Users. They note that about 1 in every 200 people who take statin drugs will develop diabetes simply because of taking the drug for as little as five years. That covers a pretty good segment of the adult population, 100,000 new diabetics. If you are one of the people without heart disease who are taking statins prophylactically, or “just because it will prevent a heart attack”, I recommend that you think again, and perhaps make a different choice.

View the entire New York Times article, click here >> http://goo.gl/nNCQk .

The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) even put out a warning about statin drugs: “Increases in glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and fasting serum glucose levels have been reported with statin use.”[6]

And besides, one really wonders how much of the benefit of statin drugs to those who have already had a heart attack comes from changing of lifestyle. The authors of a paper about adherence to a regimen of statin drugs in older adults suggested that “patients initiating and adhering to chronic preventive drug therapies are more likely to engage in other health-promoting behaviors. Failure to account for this relationship may introduce bias in any epidemiologic study evaluating the effect of a preventive therapy on clinical outcomes.” [7]

In other words, it is not at all clear whether lowering cholesterol by means of statin drugs is as healthy as the manufacturers of said statin drugs would like us to believe.

Remind me again why I would want to take a drug whose “side effects” include muscle aches, chronic fatigue, heart failure, diabetes, cancer and memory loss?

Just because “the doctor said so” is not sufficient reason to engage in risky behavior.

We do have a choice. We can vote both with our pocketbooks and with our choice of lifestyle. We do not have to fill the prescription.

We can choose to eat fruits and vegetables. We can even choose to eat them organically grown. We can choose to limit our portions of animal based proteins. We can choose to avoid osteoporosis-inducing sodas and cancer-inducing artificial sweeteners.

We can choose to avoid unnecessary drugs.

The Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine reminds us, “We have a choice”.

Genetic Roulette

A film by Jeffrey M. Smith – Narrated by Lisa Oz

A production of the Institute for Responsible Technology

Are you and your family on the wrong side of a bet?

When the US government ignored repeated warnings by its own scientists and allowed untested genetically modified (GM) crops into our environment and food supply, it was a gamble of unprecedented proportions. The health of all living things and all future generations were put at risk by an infant technology.

After two decades, physicians and scientists have uncovered a grave trend. The same serious health problems found in lab animals, livestock, and pets that have been fed GM foods are now on the rise in the US population. And when people and animals stop eating genetically modified organisms (GMOs), their health improves.

This seminal documentary provides compelling evidence to help explain the deteriorating health of Americans, especially among children, and offers a recipe for protecting ourselves and our future.

The main feature film Genetic Roulette is 85 minutes.

Toxic pesticides from GM food crops found in unborn babies.

Posted previously at The Daily Telegraph website.

Toxic pesticides which are implanted into genetically modified food crops have lodged in the blood of pregnant women and their unborn babies, research shows.

Scientists at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, at the University of Sherbrooke Hospital Centre in Quebec, took dozens of samplesfrom women.

Traces of the toxin were found 93 per cent of the pregnant mothers and in 80 per cent of the umbilical cords.

The research suggested the chemicals were entering the body through eating meat, milk and eggs from farm livestock which have been fed GM corn.

Pete Riley, the director of GM Freeze, a group opposed to GM farming, described the research as “very significant”.

Maternal and fetal exposure to pesticides associated to genetically modified foods in Eastern Townships of Quebec, Canada.

Abstract

Pesticides associated to genetically modified foods (PAGMF), are engineered to tolerate herbicides such as glyphosate (GLYP) and gluphosinate (GLUF) or insecticides such as the bacterial toxin bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between maternal and fetal exposure, and to determine exposure levels of GLYP and its metabolite aminomethyl phosphoric acid (AMPA), GLUF and its metabolite 3-methylphosphinicopropionic acid (3-MPPA) and Cry1Ab protein (a Bt toxin) in Eastern Townships of Quebec, Canada. Blood of thirty pregnant women (PW) and thirty-nine nonpregnant women (NPW) were studied. Serum GLYP and GLUF were detected in NPW and not detected in PW. Serum 3-MPPA and CryAb1 toxin were detected in PW, their fetuses and NPW. This is the first study to reveal the presence of circulating PAGMF in women with and without pregnancy, paving the way for a new field in reproductive toxicology including nutrition and utero-placental toxicities.

Glyphosate formulations induce apoptosis and necrosis in human umbilical, embryonic, and placental cells.

Abstract

We have evaluated the toxicity of four glyphosate (G)-based herbicides in Roundup formulations, from 10(5) times dilutions, on three different human cell types. This dilution level is far below agricultural recommendations and corresponds to low levels of residues in food or feed. The formulations have been compared to G alone and with its main metabolite AMPA or with one known adjuvant of R formulations, POEA. HUVEC primary neonate umbilical cord vein cells have been tested with 293 embryonic kidney and JEG3 placental cell lines. All R formulations cause total cell death within 24 h, through an inhibition of the mitochondrial succinate dehydrogenase activity, and necrosis, by release of cytosolic adenylate kinase measuring membrane damage. They also induce apoptosis via activation of enzymatic caspases 3/7 activity. This is confirmed by characteristic DNA fragmentation, nuclear shrinkage (pyknosis), and nuclear fragmentation (karyorrhexis), which is demonstrated by DAPI in apoptotic round cells. G provokes only apoptosis, and HUVEC are 100 times more sensitive overall at this level. The deleterious effects are not proportional to G concentrations but rather depend on the nature of the adjuvants. AMPA and POEA separately and synergistically damage cell membranes like R but at different concentrations. Their mixtures are generally even more harmful with G. In conclusion, the R adjuvants like POEA change human cell permeability and amplify toxicity induced already by G, through apoptosis and necrosis. The real threshold of G toxicity must take into account the presence of adjuvants but also G metabolism and time-amplified effects or bioaccumulation. This should be discussed when analyzing the in vivo toxic actions of R. This work clearly confirms that the adjuvants in Roundup formulations are not inert. Moreover, the proprietary mixtures available on the market could cause cell damage and even death around residual levels to be expected, especially in food and feed derived from R formulation-treated crops.

At the Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine, we see you as a whole being – body, mind, and personality – rather than as a bunch of disconnected parts. If you tell us you have fatigue and brain fog, we are literally going to look from head to toe. For example:

• Are the mitochondria, the energy factories in each of your 60 trillion or so cells, operating inefficiently because of trans fats in the diet, or because you are low on thyroid? • What is your level of fatty acids?

• What is your level of vitamin D and other hormones? • Are there low-level, chronic infections you may not be aware of like candida?

• Are you low on serotonin or dopamine, causing your neurotransmitters to misfire?

• Are allergies or heavy metals stressing your immune system and depleting your energy reserves?

• Do we need to increase the brain’s processing speed by increasing neural connections with HEG (hemoencephalography), or EEG (electroencephalography) biofeedback, teaching the brain to make new connections?

We begin with a thorough physical workup. We combine physical measurements from lab tests with quantum measurements to look at health at the cellular level. And we often incorporate thermography to look for inflammation.

Then we look at diet and lifestyle because they impact so many health issues. Heart disease, diabetes, prostate cancer, breast cancer, and obesity account for 75% of health-care costs, and yet these are largely preventable and even reversible by changing diet and lifestyle. A 2008 study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that diet and lifestyle approaches may even change gene expression. Genes associated with cancer, heart disease and inflammation were “turned off” whereas protective genes were “turned on” after only a few months of calculated dietary changes. Food gives information to the body.

We also look at environmental factors such as heavy metals, pesticides, and chemicals because they can suppress immune system function and alter DNA.

Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine provides treatment for 300+ holistic and medical conditions, some of which are listed below:

Acupuncture – insertion of very fine needles in order to influence physiological functioning of the body

Allergy Testing – ALCAT blood tests, provocation/neutralization challenge, preservative-free allergens

Osteoporosis Test – simple urine test to determine bone loss

Thermography – screening mechanism for breast cancer and painful inflammations that does not use unsafe radiation

Women’s Health – annual wellness exams, breast cancer screening, bioidentical hormones, weight loss, osteoporosis, counseling, and more

We treat children and adults. Many children come to us with developmental delays (autism, PDD, ADD, AD/HD) and/or environmental allergies. Many adults come to us who have not been able to find answers elsewhere and are committed to getting well, not just suppressing symptoms or enhancing memory with prescription drugs. We work in partnership to teach and to hold your hand on the journey toward health. We spend a great deal of time educating our patients to empower them to be well.

History – Agaricus brasiliensis murill (ABM) is native to Brazil, where it is known as Cogumelo do sol. In Japan it is called Himematsutake, Mushroom-Fig1Agarikusutake or Kawarihiratake and in China Ji Song Rong.[1]It was discovered in 1960 by a Japanese researcher, Takatoshi Furumoto and sent to Japan for investigation.[2] It has been studied as a functional food and medicinal product. Its use as a medicinal product was first described around the 4th century A.D. as a treatment for malignant ulcers of the larynx.[3] In modern times it is used as anti-oxidant[4], anti-diabetic[5], cholesterol-lowering[6], anti-cancer[7],[8], immunomodulatory[9], anti-allergic[10], kidney protective[11], and anti-microbial agent[12].

The anti-tumor effects, more specifically, include reactive oxygen species inducer[1], anti-mitotic[2], angiogenesis inhibitor[3], topoisomerase inhibitor[4], leading to apoptosis[5], and eventually checking cancer proliferation.

Extracts of ABM appear to exert a significant effect on the immune system.[6] They activate white blood cells, macrophages, neutrophils and lymphocytes  – cells which are crucial in recognition and destruction of circulating tumor cells. These are all part of our general defense system – the guards at the gate, which we call the innate immune system.

The innate immune system is present at birth. It responds to foreign invaders – mainly microbial – in a relatively non-specific fashion. It does not make specific antibodies. Rather it recognizes certain patterns present in bacteria, leading the macrophages to surround and destroy the bacteria. The innate immune system is also crucial in the recognition of abnormal cells – cancer cells – which it normally engulfs and destroys.Once a virus or bacterium penetrates the skin (or the mucus membranes) a local infection results, causing tissue damage which, in turn, causes the tissue macrophages to call for help by secreting specific cytokines. These cytokines call for more immune cells which then surround the pathogens and destroy them.

The Complement cascade is activated, manufacturing C3a and C5a to attract yet more white cells to the area, along with fluid from the capillaries. The cytokines, when they reach the liver, cause the manufacture of acute phase proteins (sometimes called heat shock protein). Body temperature is raised, and NK (Natural Killer) cells are activated to destroy virus-infected cells. Interferon alpha and beta are secreted to make nearby cells more resistant to viral infection.

For all that Agaricus brasiliensis has so many health effects, it is a fastidious and demanding species, and must be picked within a few hours of the fruiting body maturing. The glucan content increases as the fruiting body matures, so the time of harvest is of great importance, and explains (in part) the cost of the best supplements of the mushroom.[1]

The quality of the mushrooms themselves is another important consideration. In 2006 the Japanese ministry of health decided to recall Mushroom-Supplimentproducts containing Agaricus brasiliensis because of a suspicion that the mushroom could induce the development of liver failure and cancer.[2] After extensive testing, it was determined that those mushrooms which grew in polluted urban areas of China did indeed induce liver cancer in mice[3], but that the mushrooms grown in non-polluted areas had no such effect. In fact, the agaricus species that were tested had such high mercury concentrations, one wonders whether that species is attempting to protect the environment by absorbing the toxic mercury.

The quantity of beta-d-glucan in a mushroom product depends on the quality and grade of the mushroom. Most ABM mushrooms grown outside of Brazil range from 3 to 4 %. In its natural environment, the ABM mushroom can contain up to 7% d-glucan on average. Ultra Gold quality ranges above 4.8%. Companies

selling ABM mushrooms claiming to contain 45% or more beta-D-Glucan are selling a manufactured standardized product, where Beta-D-Glucan has been added because 45% in nature does not exist.

Both alpha and beta glucans enhance the immune system, both have anti-tumor activity, and both appear in larger quantities as the fruiting body matures.[1]

ABOUT ARIZONA CENTER FOR ADVANCED MEDICINE CANCER CENTER

At the Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine we believe that cancer is an environmental disease which serves as a signpost, both internally and externally, pointing toward areas of unfinished business which need to be addressed. These areas may relate to chemical toxicity, chronic inflammation, environmental pollution, internal emotional or mental disturbances… some area within the body and its environment which is out of balance. We believe that the causes of cancer are multiple, and likewise the potential treatments. We believe that every patient deserves individual treatment, depending on the cause and the circumstances. And we believe that it is possible to help cancer cells recall where they came from, and how to get back there.

Dr. Martha Grout MD, MD (H) has always admired the philosophy of Dr. Ernesto Contreras, the founder of a facility in Tijuana, Mexico called the Oasis of Health. He encouraged his physicians only to prescribe treatments that they themselves would be willing to take under the same circumstances.

That lets out standard chemotherapy for us, and also much radiation therapy. Surgery can debulk tumors, although it seldom can remove them completely. Biopsy – cutting into a tumor to take a small piece – leaves a track (in the case of needle biopsy) or a giant hole (in the case of surgical biopsy) for cancer cells to escape their encapsulation and migrate into the blood stream more easily.

We feel that creation of a healing space and a healing doctor-patient relationship is just as important as integrating conventional and so-called “alternative” care. We find nothing “alternative” about nutritional support, elimination of sugars and chemical toxins, restoration of cellular metabolites and nutrients. We call it good medicine.

Integrated-1w

The Integration of Conventional and Alternative Medicine -The Best of Both Worlds.

Did you know there are different branches of medicine? Most of us think that there is only the one, called Allopathic Medicine – the branch of medicine that uses the designation of M.D.  Yet many more branches are coming into more frequent use in today’s Western world of medicine. These are often called “Alternative Medicine”. Some of these branches are Naturopathic, Homeopathic, Ayurvedic, Osteopathic, Chiropractic, Chinese, and more.  In this article, we present the similarities and differences between doctors trained in Conventional and Alternative Medicine and illustrate how they collaborate with one another to provide effective medical care for patients.  At Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine, we integrate three of the branches of medicine: Allopathic, Homeopathic and Naturopathic Medicine so our patients can receive the best medical care possible.

What is Allopathic Medicine?

Allopathic Medicine, commonly referred to as “conventional medicine”, is a system of medicine that aims to combat disease through the Integrated-allsuppression of symptoms by the use of pharmaceutical drugs or surgery. The doctors who practice Allopathic Medicine have the designation M.D. after their name and are often referred to as Medical Doctor.

What is Homeopathic Medicine?

Homeopathic Medicine is a holistic form of medicine aimed to restore the body to its natural state and healthy balance by prescribing a remedy designed to stimulate the body’s internal healing process rather than to suppress the symptoms using pharmaceutical drugs.  Homeopathic Integrated-homoMedicine is a system of treatment that is based on Law of Similars, “like cures like”; meaning a substance which can cause symptoms of illness in a well person, can, when given in a very diluted miniscule amounts, eliminate those very same or similar symptoms in an ill person.  A remedy is prescribed to an individual based on his or her unique state of physical, mental and emotional well-being. Two people with severe headaches, for example, might not receive the same remedies.  Allopathic Doctors (M.D.) who are licensed in Arizona as Homeopathic Physicians have the designation M.D.(H) after their name and are often referred to as Homeopathic Physicians.

What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic Medicine, also known as  “natural medicine”, is a type medical system that uses a holistic approach in treating the person Integrated-Naturaddressing the mind, body and spirit of the person instead of treating disease initially with pharmaceutical drugs or surgery.  Naturopathic Medicine treats disease states, symptoms and maladies with non-invasive and less toxic treatments encouraging minimal use of pharmaceutical drugs or surgery.  The physicians who practice Naturopathic Medicine have the designation N.D. or N.M.D. after their name and are often referred to as Naturopathic Doctor, or Naturopathic Medical Doctor..
A good analogy to understand how Allopathic, Homeopathic and Naturopathic Medicine co-exist is to consider medicine as analogous to a tree with many branches with each branch representing a different philosophy of medicine.  In this case, three of the branches represent Allopathic, Homeopathic and Naturopathic Medicine, with each branch of medicine having its own tools and methodologies sharing a common trunk and root of medicine, the healing arts, which is to protect and improve a patient’s health.

How is an Allopathic Doctor (M.D.) different from a Naturopathic Doctor (N.D/N.M.D.)?

The primary differences between the two disciplines are in the philosophical approach and the therapies they use in their practice:
Allopathic Doctors address and treat the symptoms of disease rather than the source of the illness by using pharmaceutical drugs or surgery.  They are best at doing interventional medicine, which is treating acute and emergency conditions.  Depending on their medical training, Allopathic Doctors are either general practitioners such as primary care/family doctor, or specialists such as allergist, cardiologist, dermatologist, endocrinologist, Emergency Room doctor, Ears-Nose-Throat doctor, surgeon, etc.
Naturopathic and Homeopathic Doctors use a holistic approach when treating patients. They examine the environment, lifestyle, physical and emotional well-being of individual patients to address the root causes of the disease and use natural, non-invasive and non-toxic therapies as treatments.  Some of the therapies used are nutritional supplements, herbal supplements, I.V. (intravenous) nutritional therapy, acupuncture, homeopathy, hydrotherapy, minor surgery, physical medicine among others.  They use pharmaceutical drugs as a last resort.  They are best at getting results with treating chronic conditions and preventing disease.  Naturopathic Doctors are trained to be primary care physicians. Homeopathic Doctors may come from many disciplines.
Both kinds of physicians can diagnose a disease, predict its course and prescribe treatment.  The essential difference between the two is the method of treatment they prescribe.

What medical training do an Allopathic Doctor (M.D.) and a Naturopathic Doctor (N.D/N.M.D.) receive?

They both are required to obtain a college degree with emphasis in pre-med before entering medical school.  They study biomedical sciences at a four-year accredited graduate medical school, with a curriculum composed of rigorous biomedical sciences covering anatomy, biochemistry, cardiology, dermatology, embryology, histology, immunology, microbiology, minor surgery, neurosciences, pathology, pharmacology, physiology, laboratory and physical diagnosis, clinical case analysis, and others.
The first two years of their medical training are essentially the same.  The final two years are different in that Allopathic Doctors do clinical Integrated-radclifftraining in hospitals with primary focus on conventional therapeutics, whereas Naturopathic Doctors do clinical training in outpatient clinics covering both alternative and conventional therapeutics.
Furthermore, in their final two years of clinical training, Allopathic Doctors are involved with direct patient care, with clinical rotations in both outpatient and hospital settings, covering conventional medical treatments in the operating room, the hospital wards, the radiology suites and outpatient clinics and offices. Naturopathic Doctors are also involved with direct patient care, with clinical rotations in the outpatient setting, covering diverse areas in general conventional medicine and alternative medicine such as acupuncture, botanical medicine, clinical nutrition/IV nutritional therapy, environmental medicine, homeopathy, hydrotherapy, minor surgery, physical medicine and others.

How is an Allopathic Doctor (M.D.) different from a Homeopathic Physician, M.D.(H)?

The primary differences between an Allopathic Doctor and a Homeopathic Physician are in the philosophical approach and the therapies they use in their practice.
Allopathic Doctors (M.D) who also trained in Homeopathic Medicine (MD(H) are required to take extra post-graduate training, and pass a written Homeopathic Examination in order to be licensed as a Homeopathic Physician.    In the State of Arizona, a Homeopathic Physician can incorporate the following modalities for which they are trained in their practice: acupuncture, heavy metal chelation therapy, homeopathy, minor surgery, neuromuscular integration, nutrition, and orthomolecular therapy.
Furthermore, Homeopathic Physicians share similar philosophies and modalities with Naturopathic Physicians in that they treat the whole person.

View the video “Why Did dr Grout Become an Alternative Physician?” click here >> http://goo.gl/WDlGs.

How do the doctors trained in Allopathic, Homeopathic and Naturopathic Medicine collaborate with each other at Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine?

Despite how they were medically trained, our doctors at Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine share a common ground in that they practice Functional Medicine.  Functional Medicine emphasizes treating the patient and not the disease by using a systems biology approach to analyze how all of the components of an individual’s biological system, lifestyle and environment interact with each other.  The doctors use all the tools of healing from both conventional and other branches of medicine, and apply Functional Medicine to identify and address the root causes of disease by treating the body as a whole integrated system rather than an isolated set of symptoms.
Our doctors at Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine believe Functional Medicine is the best approach to restore the function and balance to the body. We call it good medicine.

Cancer Series #24 – What is cancer?

Submitted by as part of the ‘Exclusive Cancer Series’ of articles by Dr. Martha Grout, M.D., M.D.(H) at the Arizona Center for Advanced DrMarthGroutWMedicine Cancer Center, Scottsdale (Phoenix), Az.

I read an article the other day in The Oncologist, a professional journal for those physicians who deal with cancer. The title was “Discontinuing Bevacizumab in Patients with Glioblastoma: An Ethical Analysis”.[1] Bevacizumab is an antibody against a specific cell surface receptor which is seen in some instances of colorectal cancer, non-small cell lung cancer, HER-2 negative breast cancer, renal cell cancer and glioblastoma – a devastating and almost universally fatal brain cancer. Ted Kennedy died of glioblastoma. Overall survival rate is about 5% at five years. Not a good tumor to have. In the ethical analysis section of the paper we read: “Unfortunately, bevacizumab failure is inevitable and associated with poor outcomes.”

So if the drug is so ineffective, why do we give it to anyone? Especially when side effects include hypertension, kidney damage, fatigue, and bleeding inside the brain. Not to mention the fact that the drug is expensive. We’re talking in the neighborhood of $4600 per dose, every two weeks, cost to the physician.

Insurance companies may well pay less – they have better negotiating power than individual physicians, but they don’t generally publicize their costs to the general public. Patients almost certainly pay more, because costs are determined by need to pay office staff, personnel, and equipment to administer the drugs, as well as all the other office overhead – taxes, electricity, rent, water, etc etc.

And if the drug does not work, what’s the point in giving it?

Then I read another article a couple of days later in the Journal of Clinical Oncology entitled “Waiting for a Miracle”.[2] This one was about an Cancer24-ipt18-year-old with metastatic osteosarcoma, who kept saying that he wanted everything done, because he was waiting for a miracle cure. It was not until the very end, when intubation and artificial ventilation was the only option left, that the patient finally decided not to insist on going to the ICU and being intubated.

The physician author of the article writes: “I am a strong believer that if miraculous healing is going to occur, it will occur regardless of human intervention. Waiting for a miracle, however, is not part of our professional duty. As much as our patients, their families, or we ourselves want to believe that there may be divine intervention or that a higher power will do its job, we still must do ours.”

That reminds me of the joke about the man whose town was overwhelmed by the floods. The firemen came by, told him to evacuate, he answered “No, God will take care of me.” The waters rose up to his doorstep. The boats came by, offered him a place. He answered “No, God will take care of me.” The waters rose above the first floor. He went up to the roof. A helicopter came back, offered to lower a ladder. He answered “No, God will take care of me.” And when, having drowned in the blood waters, he berated God at the Pearly Gates, God said to him: “What do you mean, you thought I would take care of you? I sent you firemen. I sent you a boat. I even sent you a helicopter. You refused them all.”

Our job is to provide options for treatments, and to provide the treatments that we are capable of providing. Our job is to be as well-educated as we can be, to learn as much as we can from our colleagues, to apply as much as we can to ourselves and our patients, and to learn to accept the inevitable truth that we are not perfect. We will not always “win”. We will not always see “cures” in our patients. In fact, it goes against our professional conduct statutes to promise to cure anything. We may see some of our patients get healthy, and leave our offices expressing their gratitude. Others get healthy and just leave. Some do not get healthy, despite our best efforts. Some die.

A young woman with leukemia named Suleika Jaouad writes about her experience with leukemia and chemotherapy in the New York Times Cancer24-LuekPatientHealth section. One post was on June 21st, where she writes: “It’s a ghoulish monthly party, and the guests always arrive on time: nausea, vomiting, chills, exhaustion, fever, mouth sores, pain, infections and emergency hospitalizations. Despite the clockwork of these cycles (start chemo, wait for symptoms, get sick, go to the hospital), at the start of every new round I convince myself that the outcome will be different. This time, I am going to be stronger than my treatment. This time, my mind will outwit my body. This time.” She writes about the battle language of cancer – and has come to the realization that it’s not “us versus them” as much as it is “us versus us … [our] own civil war”. She finally realizes that “the real battle I need to fight is against this win-lose mentality.”

We can cultivate the soil, we can plant the seeds, we can water them, we can remove the weeds. But we have no more control over whether seeds Cancer24-foodgerminate and grow into adult plants than we have control over the weather.

We can eat healthy foods, we can get enough sleep, we can exercise every day, we can avoid wheat, dairy, monosodium glutamate, aspartame, mercury-containing vaccines and dental fillings. But we have no control over our genetics, or our mothers’ behavior that modified our genetics, or the factory down the road that spews chemicals into the air and the groundwater, also modifying our DNA expression.

View the video below from an Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine cancer patient…

We can pay our bills, take care of our houses and our offices, hire the right people, pay our staff a fair wage. But we have no control over the economy. We have no control over the banks that hold our mortgages. We have no control over staff who take what they can get and steal that to which they are not entitled. On the flip side, we also have no control over those staff members who give more than they receive, and who are cheerful healers under all circumstances.

What price do we pay for peace of mind? What price for being assured that everything possible is being done? What price for compassionate Cancer24-FightingCancerGraphiccare? When do we call it quits? When do we tell the patient that we have no more tricks up our sleeves? And how do we tell them?

When is it time to realize that death is not the ultimate enemy? When do we begin to believe that death is a change in form? And how does that relate to a business? When is the right time to stop fighting, give it all back to the bank, and move on? Tell the patients that we are sorry, but we have no more medicine, we cannot afford the rent, and the patients will have to go elsewhere for their treatment because the office is shutting down?

I guess we don’t know, until we know. The kid with the metastatic osteosarcoma didn’t know, until he realized that he did not have any choice about whether he was going to die. He could choose to die surrounded by family, or in the ICU sedated and on a ventilator, but die he would. We as businesses do not know either, until we either recover our full strength or get into a position where we can no longer accomplish that to which we are called. Just because the body is unhealthy does not mean it can’t recover. Just because the economy is terrible does not mean that all business will die.

Change is inevitable. Nothing ever stays still. Even rocks erode, mountains turn into valleys and valleys become mountains. Lakes drain, oceans are formed, volcanoes erupt, we are born, we die, and in between hopefully we make some difference. We leave the world a better place than we found it. We have moved on, and brought someone up to take our place.

Cancer Series #23 – Gluten Sensitivity, Celiac Disease, Wheat Allergy, and Cancer.

Submitted by as part of the ‘Exclusive Cancer Series’ of articles by Dr. Martha Grout, M.D., M.D.(H) at the Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine Cancer Center, Scottsdale (Phoenix), Az.

Dr. Grout’s recommendation: Make this new year’s resolution…“This will be the last time you eat gluten – wheat – bread – pasta – etc.”

When we think about gluten sensitivity, we immediately think about celiac disease. Scientists are finally beginning to realize what those of us Cancer23-Wheatwho are sensitive to wheat have known for years – there are many manifestations of wheat sensitivity, with celiac disease being only one form.[1]

Celiac disease was first described in 1887 by Dr. Samuel Gee. A Dutch pediatrician, Willem Dicke, discovered in the 1940s that when he removed all wheat products from the diets of children with celiac disease, their symptoms completely resolved. In the 1950s biopsy of the small intestine confirmed the location of the problem. In 1966 the association of gluten sensitivity with skin disease was noted. In 1966 a paper was published on the association of gluten sensitivity with neurologic disorders.[2]

And some doctors are still telling their patients that a gluten-free diet is not only unnecessary, but even deleterious, harmful to their health and the health of their children, because they are unable to confirm a diagnosis of celiac disease based on standard testing.

And why is gluten-associated disease so difficult to diagnose? Remember if you want to make anything – a bookcase or an apple pie or a diagnosis – it is much easier if you have the right tools.Cancer23-celtic

Celiac disease affects approximately 1% of the population of European descent.[3] How often have we heard “You don’t have celiac disease, therefore you can eat all the wheat you want without worrying about it.” How is celiac disease diagnosed? Typically with blood tests and an intestinal biopsy.

  • If IgA is present in sufficient amounts, we see anti-tTG (tissue trans-glutaminase) antibodies.
  • If IgA is present, we see anti-endomysial antibodiesCancer23-celtic2
  • If IgA is not present, but IgG is present in sufficient amounts, we see DGP (deaminated gliadin peptides) – good test for children under the age of 3
  • Small intestine biopsy will show characteristic changes – increased intraepithelial lymphocytes[4], some atrophy of the intestinal villi[5]

But what if we don’t show any of those changes, and yet we feel bad whenever we eat wheat or gluten-containing products? Since the early 1980s we have seen literature about a wide range of proteins in wheat to which people may be sensitive or allergic.[6] Only ONE of these proteins is tested by standard laboratories. No wonder we can’t make the diagnosis of wheat sensitivity – we are not testing the right antibodies.

Cyrex Laboratories, in Scottsdale, AZ, under the direction of Aristo Vojdani, PhD has an excellent panel called “Wheat/Gluten Proteome Reactivity & Autoimmunity” that measures many of these commercially untested antibodies in a sample of saliva. The test can even be used with very small children – they love to spit!

Wheat IgG, Wheat IgA, Wheat Germ Agglutinin IgG, Native + Deamidated Alpha-Gliadin-33-mer IgG, Native + Deamidated Alpha-Gliadin-33-mer IgA, Alpha-Gliadin-17-mer IgG, Alpha-Gliadin-17-mer IgA, Gamma-Gliadin-15-mer IgG, Gamma-Gliadin-15-mer IgA, Omega-Gliadin-17-mer IgG, Omega-Gliadin-17-mer IgA, Glutenin-21-mer IgG, Glutenin-21-mer IgA, Gluteomorphin+Prodynorphin IgG, Gluteomorphin+Prodynorphin IgA, Gliadin-Transglutaminase IgG, Gliadin-Transglutaminase IgA, Transglutaminase-2 IgG, Transglutaminase-2 IgA, Transglutaminase-3 IgG, Transglutaminase-3 IgA, Transglutaminase-6 IgG, Transglutaminase-6 IgA.

So if we can just measure the right antibodies, we may be able more easily to diagnose many of the following wheat-associated conditions.

Wheat dependent exercise induced asthma[7] – we may see recurrent wheezing whenever someone engages in any kind of exercise. The Cancer23-papilaallergist or pulmonologist gives them some kind of bronchodilating inhaler to use before exercise, but may never think to inquire about their diet.

Dermatitis herpetiformis – skin rash caused by gluten sensitivity.  The microscopic appearance on biopsy of the skin lesions is quite characteristic. There is blistering under the epidermis (top layer of the skin) with inflammatory cells (neutrophils and eosinophils) in the dermal papillae found at the base of hair follicles.[8],[9]   IgA deposits are found within the skin.[10]

Cancer23-conditionphotos

Gluten-associated cardiomyopathy. The Chinese first noted some 3500 years ago an association between the heart and the small intestine (Shao Yin Tai Yang meridian). More recently, we have read reports of gluten sensitivity associated with autoimmune inflammation of the heart and heart failure.[11],[12]

Autoimmune diseases – thyroiditis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, even type I diabetes mellitus have all been associated with antibodies to wheat-derived peptides. The incidence of autoimmune disease is increased up to 30-fold in patients with celiac disease.[13]Cancer23-xray

Osteoporosis – the blood of slightly more than 50% of gluten sensitive patients has antibodies to structures crucial to the formation of bone.[14] Think of how many people could have avoided hip fractures and humped backs had they known to avoid gluten in their diets.

Neurologic illness – diseases as diverse as cerebellar ataxia[15] (inability to keep one’s balance), seizures[16], neuropathy[17], dementia[18], chronic headache[19], and even infertility[20] have been reported to be associated with gluten or wheat sensitivity.

M Hadjivassiliou quotes the “modern” definition of gluten sensitivity as written by MN March in 1995 and published in the QJM: International Journal of Medicine:

“…a state of heightened immunological responsiveness to ingested gluten in genetically susceptible individuals”.[21]

It does appear that the marked upsurge in chronic inflammatory diseases, autoimmune diseases, osteoporosis, autism and cancer parallel the Cancer23-bentoverincrease in manifestation of gluten sensitivity in our population. Is it possible that those dermal papillae could be involved?

Dermal papillae contain stem cells – cells which can multiply and turn into a multitude of epithelial-derived organs like hair follicles, sweat glands, sebaceous cysts, new hair… One wonders about the possibility of their also turning into less helpful organs like skin cancer, or other solid tumors derived from epithelium, and whether there might be similar stem cells in other parts of the body associated with ectoderm and/or endoderm, like the lungs, pancreas, stomach, colon, breasts…

There is some evidence of increased incidence of lymphomas and gastro-intestinal cancers in people with celiac disease.[22],[23] Fortunately there is also some evidence that going on a gluten-free diet can improve the situation.[24]

So…gluten or no gluten? If we eat bread addictively, we are going to have a hard time giving it up, to be sure.

But if we can avoid that intolerable itch, explosive diarrhea, brain fog, wheezing, autoimmune disease, and a host of other symptoms, it might just be worthwhile.

We have the choice.

Cancer22

The Exclusive Cancer Series #22 – Integrative Cancer Care.

Important information cancer patients and their families should know.

Submitted by as part of the ‘Exclusive Cancer Series’ of articles by Dr. Martha Grout, M.D., M.D.(H) at the Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine Cancer Center, Scottsdale (Phoenix), Az.

Chemo, surgery, radiation – this is the mantra of current recommendations for cancer therapy. Treatment options on the website of the Mayo cancer18-BestAnswLogoClinic, “the most innovative, progressive care anywhere” are the following: bone marrow transplantation, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and radiofrequency ablation.[1]

View the FREE video below describing I.P.T. therapy at Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine…

View more information on the Greek RESEARCH GENETIC CANCER CENTRE LTD methods, click here >> Cancer18-fig2http://goo.gl/hEh1F , and scroll about half way down the page.

Anti-inflammatory supplements and spices help to restore balance to the immune system. Cancer22-cancersymbolNutrients help to sustain the body in its battle. And release of old stuff helps to restore the soul to a place of gratitude and love.

Every modality plays a part in our therapies. We are honored to share the journey with our patients. We would prefer to share the journey earlier in its course rather than later, when the immune system is already gone, and the body is in desperate straits.

Standard chemotherapy is like a bomb exploding, creating collateral damage to the organism.

Insulin Potentiation Therapy, when combined with Integrative and Functional Medicine Therapy, is a lifeline to help restore physical function and enable the body to heal.

Asthma

Do You Really Know What Asthma Is, or If You Have It?

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways and lungs. Its impact can be profound because it can interrupt sleep, limit physical activity, and disrupt family routines.Asthma-1-4

Cases of asthma are rising so fast it is now widely viewed as an epidemic. Asthma affects about 7% of the adult population, and up to 25% of children in big cities like Harlem, NY.[1,2], Asthma is on the rise among every age group all across the county.

Worldwide, the asthma incidence has increased by 45% since the 1970s. The increase is seen mainly in countries which are industrialized. This suggests that some factor in the lifestyle of industrialized nations is causative – although it is difficult to design ethical placebo-controlled double blind studies to prove exactly what might be the primary cause.

Quick Facts:

  • Asthma accounts for more hospitalizations in children than any other chronic illness.
  • Asthma is the number one cause of school absenteeism
  • American Lung Association finds that 130 of every 1000 students have asthma, which equates to about 3 children per classroom in the United States (2004)
  • Asthma is seen in more boys than girls.
  • Between 1980 and 1993, the numbers for asthma in children nearly doubled.

Signs and Symptoms-

Asthma is a “syndrome” or disease characterized by:

  • Airway obstruction
  • An exaggerated narrowing of the small airways in response to irritating stimuli (called a bronchoconstrictor response)
  • Inflammation of the airways resulting in production of thick sticky mucus which is difficult to cough out
  • Recurring attacks, with wheezing or cough caused by factors which do not affect most of the population

Asthma’s symptoms may range from mild shortness of breath to life-threatening airway obstruction. Most commonly, people wheeze when theyAsthma-tubes exhale and experience an increased rate of respiration. Sometimes the wheezing can actually be heard by another person as a whistling sound when the asthmatic breathes out. Sometimes people have ronchi, rattling sounds caused by mucus in the larger airways.

Occasionally asthma sounds like a cough that just won’t stop – no wheezing. If the asthmatic attack is extremely bad, you sometimes do not hear wheezing because the air flow is so low.

Patients are generally anxious during an acute asthma attack. The anxiety subsides as the attack diminishes. If wheezing diminishes but anxiety increases, this indicates worsening of an asthma attack, and strongly suggests need for immediate medical care.

What Type of Asthma Do You Have?

Aspirin-induced asthma: some people are extremely sensitive to aspirin and other salicylates, even those contained naturally in fruits and vegetables. these people may even wheeze when they take other Cox-2 inhibitors like ibuprofen.

Childhood asthma: generally brought on by food allergy, sometimes by infection. Twin studies show that about 60% of identical twins both have asthma. This suggests that there is a genetic susceptibility, but that there must also be some other environmental exposure which triggers the disease.

Adult-onset asthma: may be associated with a recurrence of childhood asthma. Adults may also develop asthma without any prior symptoms in childhood. Frequently they have food or environmental chemical allergies which can be diagnosed and treated.

Allergy-induced asthma: allergies may express themselves in the nose (as “allergic rhinitis” (chronically runny stuffy nose), or “allergic sinusitis” (chronic plugging of the sinuses associated with pain in the face and around the eyes). Allergies may present as itchy red eyes (“allergic conjunctivitis”) or skin rash (“atopic dermatitis” or “eczema”). Allergies may also present with wheezing and airway obstruction, and now they are called “asthma”.

What Causes Asthma?

The well-known Cecil Textbook of Medicine states that asthma is a “clinical syndrome of unknown etiology”, meaning that allopathic medicine does not know what causes asthma.[3] Approximately 60% of asthmatics have asthmatic parents, meaning that asthma has both genetic and Asthma-lungsenvironmental causes. There may be a predisposition, but there also needs to be some environmental insult to trigger the asthma.

Asthma is seen in association with allergies to foods or chemicals, pollens and molds, cigarette smoke. It is seen in people who have allergies to chemicals in their workplace environments, particularly to molds or to formaldehyde and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) used in new carpets and glues.

Smoke and environmental chemicals create free radicals. Research suggests asthma is caused in part by increased levels of free radicals. Vitamin E inhibits IgE responses to allergic stimuli in animals. “These findings may explain the beneficial effect of dietary vitamin E on the incidence of asthma,” researchers wrote in The Lancet.[4]

Asthma is seen more frequently in households of smokers, and is found especially in children and grandchildren of smokers, if the smoking continued during pregnancy.[5]

Studies have linked asthma and allergies with the consumption of pasteurized milk. “Fewer and fewer people can tolerate commercial milk,” states Sally Fallon of the Weston A. Price Foundation. “Pasteurization distorts the delicate protein compounds in milk. The body recognizes these warped components as foreign and mounts an energy-sapping immune response.” Many people who are allergic to pasteurized/homogenized milk are not allergic to raw milk.

Asthma may also develop after severe respiratory infection – those people whose colds always go to their chests. Infants with certain respiratory viruses (RSV, for example) develop wheezing and symptoms suggestive of asthma which may be persistent long after the respiratory infection has cleared. Foods, chemicals, pollens, molds, fungi, and certain viruses are well-known to cause wheezing, and may induce chronic asthma in susceptible patients.

Asthma can also be triggered by emotional upset, or by grief. The lungs, in Chinese medicine, are affected by grief. When the grief is dealt with, often the lung problem is improved.

Why does asthma hit children so hard? The National Academy of Sciences has found that, in general, children are more vulnerable than adults to toxic chemicals in the environment.[6] Pound for pound, children eat more food and drink more water and juices than adults, and thus they take in more pesticides and toxic chemicals relative to body weight. Children also have a more rapid respiratory rate and take in a greater volume of air per unit of body weight than adults. At the same time, children’s organ systems are still developing and therefore are more vulnerable and less able to detoxify hazardous chemicals. According to researchers at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, children’s developing organs create “early windows of great vulnerability” during which exposure to toxins can cause great damage.[7] Exposure to chemical irritants can have significant effects on respiratory development.

Tests and Diagnosis Methods

Pulmonary function tests will show decreased maximal expiratory air flow (PEFR, peak expiratory flow rate), increased lung volume, decreased forced expiratory volume (FEV1, how rmuch air can be exhaled in one second). Even after an attack has subsided, we may see continued changes in how rapidly a breath of air can be exhaled from the lungs (called MMEFR, maximal mid-expiratory flow rate). People with chronic asthma may not recover completely between attacks.

Nitric oxide is increased in exhaled air of asthmatics.

Arterial blood gases will show decreased oxygen, and may show decreased carbon dioxide if the attack is mild, and the person is simply working hard for their oxygen. When we see increased carbon dioxide, we know that the attack is very severe. As the person worsens, the oxygen decreases and the carbon dioxide increases.

Chest Xray may be normal, if the person is healthy and the attack is not too severe. It may also show increased lung volume with flattened diaphragms, if the attack is severe. In that case, there may be significant air trapping behind swollen air passages – kind of like a one-way ball valve.

Routine blood work may show a high concentration of eosinophils, cells which are associated with allergic reactions. We may see high levels of IgE, and immunoglobulin directed against substances to which a patient is allergic.

Sputum coughed out from the lungs may be clear, or green, or yellow. Often we see long thin tubules of sputum, called “casts”. This is debris from the lungs molded into the shape of the tubular air passages.

Treatment Options

Allopathic medicine treats asthma with pharmaceutical medication. The drugs are discussed on many websites, and may include:

• Bronchodilators like albuterol, to cause the airways to get larger and relieve shortness of breath. Patients of a specific genotype (the arginine 16 Asthma-Floventallele of the ß2 adrenergic receptor) have an abnormally accelerated accommodation reaction to these medications, requiring more and more to get the same response. These people should be treated with other forms of medications for the long term, although they may use the bronchodilators in the short term without danger.

• Steroids – given by inhalation – to decrease the inflammation in the airways, thereby reducing both the secretion of mucus and the amount of blood traveling in the capillaries around the small airways. Steroids are a preventative or prophylactic treatment, rather than a symptomatic treatment.

• Steroids – given by mouth – have an effect over the entire system. They may be very effective for a time, to control the symptoms of asthma, but over time they may result in ulcers, osteoporosis, diabetes, increased susceptibility to infection, and loss of the body’s own adaptive mechanisms to increased stress.

• Long-acting bronchodilators like salmeterol (Severent®) act like the albuterol type bronchodilators, only not as rapidly.

• Atropine-like agents (ipratropium bromide) are appropriate for those with the above-mentioned arginine 16 allele of the ß2 adrenergic receptor, although the bromide salt in itself is unhealthy for physiologic function of the body.

• Leukotriene inhibitors like Singulair® inhibit the manufacture of leukotrienes, agents which respond to allergen attack in the body. These agents may cause liver damage, and will inhibit the inflammatory response all over the body, not just in the lungs.

• Theophylline is an older medication which is seldom used because it has a narrow margin of safety before toxic symptoms occur – nausea, vomiting, heart rhythm abnormalities.

CenterBannerThin

Alternative, Complementary, Functional, and Homeopathic Medicine also have treatments and approaches for acute asthma, which are seldom mentioned in the allopathic literature.

Immunotherapy – testing with antigens to determine reactivity (just like standard allergy testing, only using preservative-free antigens in multiple dilutions), and then treating with progressively increasing strengths of antigen to help the body develop a tolerance to the substance. [9,10],

Acupuncture – tiny needles are inserted into specific places on the body in order to change the flow of energy within the channel where the Asthma-Acupuntureneedle is placed. Specific locations will stop an acute asthma attack within a few minutes. Other locations are geared more at restoring proper lung function for the long term.

Intravenous magnesium[8] – because magnesium is a vasodilator and muscle relaxant, it can help to restore blood supply to muscles surrounding the bronchioles, or tiny air passage, and allow those muscles to relax and recover their proper function, thus relieving wheezing.

Chelation – to clear out heavy metals known to trigger chronic inflammation that can manifest in many ways.

Colonics – to clean out the colon, reducing the inflammation in the intestinal tract and thereby reducing the level of inflammation throughout the body. Abnormal bacteria in the intestinal tract – as is frequently seen in children with multiple ear infections and multiple courses of antibiotics – is another cause of a chronic inflammatory state.

• Anti-inflammatory diet – to decrease the inflammation of everyone in the household.

Homeopathic remedies – certain remedies are specific to relieve wheezing. Different remedies are chosen, depending on whether the wheezing is accompanied by fever, yellow sputum, left-sided or right-sided chest pain, etc. Viruses like the Respiratory Syncitial Virus (RSV) can cause a chronic hyper-reactive state of the small airways of the lungs. These viruses may leave a signature in the body which can predispose the victim to react to any similar virus with similar symptoms. These signatures can be treated bioenergetically, using homeopathic remedies or other methods of manipulating the body’s information systems, to allow healing of the respiratory system.
Sometimes, energetic blockages are the reason we have trouble breathing. We’ll share a memorable case study with you:

CASE STUDY:

A 23-year-old man often visited a house where there are 11 cats. He wheezed every time he walked into that house. Acupuncture on his ears successfully relieved the symptoms. But he wanted to use hypnosis with Steven Swerdfeger to get at the root cause so his symptoms would go away on their own. The hypnosis session revealed a surprising energetic block. He saw himself as a young boy on his first lion hunt in Africa. He’d become separated from his uncle, and was eaten by a lion. At this point in the session, he started to shake. Later in the session, he went back to the scene, but this time he was as if looking down on events from above. He saw his uncle searching for him. He realized the awful part of it was not being eaten by the lion, but that his tribe would think he had run away and wasn’t brave. In the hypnosis session, he saw his uncle look up at him and he was able to tell the uncle that he hadn’t run away. Then the man walked along a path to see if there were any obstructions [blockages to healing]. The man found the lion blocking his path. He jumped over the lion and the path was clear. Hypnosis session finished, now for the proof of the pudding. The young man came back to the house with cats many times after that and never had to use his inhaler again.

The Onadmed can also get into these areas. People who cannot give up control sufficiently to allow themselves to enter the hypnotic state can lie on the treatment bed and allow the blockage to be removed energetically.

Prevention Methods

Asthma-cosmeticsAvoidance of the inciting agents – if they can be identified – is almost always curative. This may include food additives, chemicals, airborne pollutants, household cleaning products, cosmetics – anything that we can eat, breathe or touch. They may also include the toxic body burden to which we have been exposed in the past, now stored in our fatty tissues (including brain) or in our bones – things like lead, mercury, organic solvents, insecticides, other pesticides. Avoidance also relieves the body of the burden of trying to fight on multiple fronts.

Unfortunately some inciting exposures are known to cause such hyper-reactivity in the lungs that the wheezing can then be triggered by almost anything irritating, not just the original irritant. Thus someone with an original exposure to mold antigen in the workplace or in their home may be able to get away from the original mold, but may still be left with chronically hyper-reactive lungs. These means a wheezing attack can be triggered by the smallest whiff of someone’s cologne, or the pesticides outside in the yard.

• Diagnosis of other toxicities which may be present in the body – for example heavy metals like aluminum, lead, arsenic or mercury – is important, if allergy treatment does not solve the problem. Heavy metals also set up a chronic inflammatory state which will be predisposed to reactive airway disease.

• A diet rich in carbohydrates (sugars, grains) and food additives (preservatives, flavor-enhancers, flavor-dispersing agents, conditioning agents, etc) or food colorings may also be highly inflammatory, and can be a major contributing factor to persistent hyper-reactivity of the airways.

GMO foods – are they safe? Look at the evidence. UPDATE. Featured by Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine treating 300+ holistic and medical conditions in Phoenix, AZ at the Scottsdale Center. Call 480-240-2600.

GMO foods – are they safe? Look at the evidence.

We originally posted the article below a few months ago. Since that post, recently Dr Martha Grout posted a comment regarding GMO on the FDA comment site. Her message is included below that was posted at the FDA…

“We have all seen the huge increase in gluten sensitivity since the introduction of bioengineered wheat in the 1950s. We have seen a surge in LogoFDAsoy sensitivity since the introduction of bioengineered soy. We have mourned the introduction of bioengineered sweet corn very recently. We were appalled at the introduction of bioengineered alfalfa. We are very concerned about the die-off of bee hives, paralleling the marked increase in the use of RoundUp and other herbicides.

And now we are seriously considering releasing bioengineered salmon into the world? Transgenic salmon developed smaller brains and cerebellums [J Fish Biol. 2012 Aug;81(3):987-1002. doi: 10.1111/j.1095-8649.2012.03348.x.

And if we eat these fish, will we also have smaller brains?

I, for one, would like to have a great deal more research done on these fish before we begin to carry out the experiment on our human population.”

A long-awaited study published online[1] on September 19, 2012 finally shows the long-term effects of Roundup® ready genetically modified corn on rats. The news is not good.

The rats were fed a diet consisting of 11% Roundup-tolerant genetically modified corn, cultivated both with and without Roundup®, and with Roundup® alone. In the two years of the study, females consistently developed breast tumors 2-3 times more frequently, and died earlier than controls. In male rats, liver damage and kidney disease 2-5 times more frequently (depending on the treatment group. For all treatments and both sexes, 76% of the recorded damage was to the kidneys.

One in 10 American adults now has some form of chronic kidney disease. The incidence of chronic kidney disease doubled between 2000 and 2008.

You can read the statistics, click here >>  http://goo.gl/EEwxP .

An article[1] published on the web from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the spring of 2009 asks the question: “Cash crop or third world savior?” Genetically modified soybeans were introduced in 1996, and Roundup® Ready corn in 1998.

There is a fallacy well-known in debating circles: Post hoc, ergo propter hoc. Rough translation – It happened after something else happened, therefore it happened because of the something else. This argument can obviously be carried to silly extremes – I got out of bed this morning, therefore there were devastating floods in South Carolina.

On the other hand, there certainly is a curious coincidence of timing in the massive explosion of cancers, kidney disease, and many other chronic diseases since the latter part of the last century.

At the very least, we can be wary. We can insist on more long-term studies of the effects of our genetic modification of crops. We can insist that our foods be labeled, so that we can make the choice whether to consume genetically modified foods.

We can always simply refuse to eat corn products, if the industry refuses to label which contain GMOs.

That means not only corn tortillas and corn chips, but also spaghetti sauce, salad dressing, and almost anything else in the “food” line that is manufactured and sold in a box, jar or can.

It is to be noted that increased mortality is seen in rats ONLY after four months. All previous studies – funded by Monsanto – have lasted only 3 months, and not all the rats that died were tested. A second video about infant formulas is also important for us to be able to make informed decisions.

Monsanto Roundup weed killer and GM maize implicated in ‘shocking’ new cancer study.

The world’s best-selling weed killer, and a genetically modified maize resistant to it, can cause tumours, multiple organ damage and lead to premature death, new research published today reveals.

“This research shows an extraordinary number of tumours developing earlier and more aggressively – particularly in female animals. I am shocked by the extreme negative health impacts,” said Dr Michael Antoniou, molecular biologist at King’s College London, and a member of CRIIGEN, the independent scientific council which supported the research.

Up to half the male rats and 70% of females died prematurely, compared with only 30% and 20% in the control group. Across both sexes the researchers found that rats fed Roundup in their water or NK603 developed two to three times more large tumours than the control group. By the beginning of the 24th month, 50-80% of females in all treated groups had developed large tumors, with up to three per animal.

With the global population expected to increase to nine billion by 2050, the UN has said that global food production must increase by 50%. And a consultation led by DEFRA entitled Green Food Project recommended as recently as 10 July 2012 that GM must be reassessed as a possible solution.

Some 85% of maize grown in the US is GM, while 70% of processed foods contain GM ingredients without GM labeling. In the UK and Europe GM maize is not consumed directly by humans but is widely used in animal feed without the requirement for GM labeling.

French study finds tumors in rats fed GM corn.

Rats fed a lifetime diet of Monsanto’s genetically modified corn or exposed to its top-selling weed killer Roundup suffered tumours and multiple organ damage, according to a French study published on Wednesday.

The animals on the GM diet suffered mammary tumours, as well as severe liver and kidney damage.

The researchers said 50 percent of males and 70 percent of females died prematurely, compared with only 30 percent and 20 percent in the control group.

Seralini believes his latest lifetime rat tests give a more realistic and authoritative view of risks than the 90-day feeding trials that form the basis of GM crop approvals, since three months is only the equivalent of early adulthood in rats.

Study on Monsanto GM corn concerns draws skepticism

In a study that prompted sharp criticism from other experts, French scientists said on Wednesday that rats fed on Monsanto’s genetically modified corn or exposed to its top-selling weed killer suffered tumors and multiple organ damage.

The French government asked the country’s health watchdog to investigate the findings further, although a number of scientists questioned the study’s basic methods and Monsanto said it felt confident its products had been proven safe.

The animals on the genetically modified (GM) diet suffered mammary tumors, as well as severe liver and kidney damage, according to the peer-reviewed study which was published in the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology and presented at a news conference in London.

The researchers said 50 percent of male and 70 percent of female rats died prematurely, compared with only 30 percent and 20 percent in the control group.

Monsanto spokesman Thomas Helscher said the company would review the study thoroughly. However, he added: “Numerous peer-reviewed scientific studies performed on biotech crops to date, including more than a hundred feeding studies, have continuously confirmed their safety, as reflected in the respective safety assessments by regulatory authorities around the world.”

EXPERTS SCEPTICAL

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are deeply unpopular in Europe but dominate major crops in the United States after Monsanto introduced a soybean genetically altered to tolerate Roundup in 1996.

France’s Jose Bove, vice-chairman of the European Parliament’s commission for agriculture and known as an opponent of GM, called for an immediate suspension of all EU cultivation and import authorizations of GM crops. “This study finally shows we are right and that it is urgent to quickly review all GMO evaluation processes,” he said in a statement.

The study is also likely to create friction in the United States, where opponents of genetically engineered foods in California are fighting to have all GMOs removed from the food supply.

Long term toxicity of a Roundup herbicide and a Roundup-tolerant genetically modified maize.

Abstract

The health effects of a Roundup-tolerant genetically modified maize (from 11% in the diet), cultivated with or without Roundup, and Roundup alone (from 0.1 ppb in water), were studied 2 years in rats. In females, all treated groups died 2–3 times more than controls, and more rapidly. This difference was visible in 3 male groups fed GMOs. All results were hormone and sex dependent, and the pathological profiles were comparable. Females developed large mammary tumors almost always more often than and before controls, the pituitary was the second most disabled organ; the sex hormonal balance was modified by GMO and Roundup treatments. In treated males, liver congestions and necrosis were 2.5–5.5 times higher. This pathology was confirmed by optic and transmission electron microscopy. Marked and severe kidney nephropathies were also generally 1.3–2.3 greater. Males presented 4 times more large palpable tumors than controls which occurred up to 600 days earlier. Biochemistry data confirmed very significant kidney chronic deficiencies; for all treatments and both sexes, 76% of the altered parameters were kidney related. These results can be explained by the non linear endocrine-disrupting effects of Roundup, but also by the overexpression of the transgene in the GMO and its metabolic consequences.

Highlights

► A Roundup-tolerant maize and Roundup provoked chronic hormone and sex dependent pathologies.

► Female mortality was 2–3 times increased mostly due to large mammary tumors and disabled pituitary.

► Males had liver congestions, necrosis, severe kidney nephropathies and large palpable tumors.

► This may be due to an endocrine disruption linked to Roundup and a new metabolism due to the transgene.

► GMOs and formulated pesticides must be evaluated by long-term studies to measure toxic effects..
